After a gradual deterioration over probably three months or so I found that no amount of inverted rolling would fix the ball. Already quite stressed with work this miracle of backward technology bounced of my desk.

As it had split into two pieces anyway, the bottom glued seal split on one end, I thought I might as well see if I can fix it. Which brings me to the reason it wasn't working...

What at first looks like a black roller is in fact compacted dust and grime. To give you an idea if how these should look, here's how they look when new.

The good news for me is I was able to put it back together after a clean and it now works really well, minus the broken trim on the bottom.
