So I formatted my computer...

I was inspired to modify my desktop using the likes of Rainmeter and Samurize. And I had loads of fun and I learnt quite a bit!..

Alas, when I tried to merge 2 config files on samurize it all started to go Pete Tong. And strangely enough, only rainmeter and samurize slowed down so much it was ridiculous. There was a 2 second lag to load menu's after menu's in Samurize.

So I uninstalled them using Revo Uninstaller as I was told that it works wonders! Restarted my machine, everything loaded fine and quickly. UNTIL.

It stopped loading after ATI Catalyst was loaded. It took approximately 61 seconds for Msn Messenger and Kapersky to show up. I restarted my computer nearly 10 times. It just kept 'not loading' the MSn and Kapersky till a long time later. It normally took 15 seconds to load MSN. Tops. Called OCUK support on Saturday. Superb service. Told me to clear up the system restore cache and it worked normally after that!

Slowly but surely, the problems came back again. So I gave up. I tried to understand what went wrong but I really can't understand. I can only think that the revo uninstaler must have messed up the registry perhaps.
I stayed up all night reformatting my PC and backing up everything. I bet quite a few of us here has experienced something like that before anyway.
Fingers crossed, it should now work normally. Just so sad about it.. I literally just bought the Titan Vulcan. I guess I really need to know more about computers.

On a seperate note, I was looking at msconfig and I didn't see anything extraordinary. Though there was this program. WMPSDF12312 or something like that and I'm guessing it was Windows Media Player. But why would the publisher be unknown? Just trying to understand why that is or is that a trojan.

Any idea's or thoughts on what could have caused this? My apologies if i'm using the wrong terms in the above post as I'm still relatively new to PC tweaking.

Any thoughts or replys would be greatly appreciated.

You have experienced a Learning curve, Try not to panic as you are through it now & back on the Happy road to PC pleasure :p
Basically mate this is how you learn & we've all been there so don't let it put you off & make mental notes about what you learnt :)

Definately up for learning it mate!

Is it fair to say that by reformatting your computer u're off to a brand new start?

Yes, but trust me it won't be long before you're back in the same situation again, take it from someone who breaks things on a regular basis.

Lesson No. 1: "How to format and reinstall Windows"

Lesson No. 2: "How to use drive imaging software" ... :)

Hmm.. sorry for this but what is drive imagine software? Do you mean creating a back up via Vista and then loading that image when you boot up with the Vista CD?

I'm actually proud of myself. I discovered how to boot up my PC via the CD drive hahahaha. I know its little to be proud of compared to many other people but hey! Learning new things all the time!

basically, imaging software will take a digital snapshot of your hard drive and you can put it on a dvd. (or similar depending on the size)

You can then boot your machine to a interface (using a cd/floppy) that allows you to restore your machine to as it was when you created the image.

This can be very handy for situations like you've just had. Instead of reinstalling windows and all your other software which can take hours, if not days. Imaging software can half the time your PC is down.

Google Norton Ghost and have a read up.

Hope it helps.

+1 for drive imaging software. Very useful. I have a backup of my boot disk saved in case anything goes wrong.

Hello Blastman!

Cheers for that! I'm reading about it at the moment. Will probably get mine copy sometime. In the meantime I'm going to probably do a windows back up
and start using rainmeter and samurize again. I'm quite determine to master it. I really really want to get into PC customization properly. Really inspired after I had my first gaming pc - The Vulcan. So much to learn about these things nowadays aye. I've been looking at a lot of screenshots of people's setups with multi displays.... desktops with really really nice scripts running... program's out there i've never even heard off... I'm dying to be able to post a picture of my setup one day. at the moment its not so nice... :( Nothing compared to a lot of people here but hey. Everyone's gotta start somewhere!

Thanks again everyone for your help.
I will start installing my applications again tonight and we'll see how that goes! I'll report my findings for sure!

Thanks very much again,
SAmmy

Nice. Installed all my programs again. Loaded Kapersky up.
Its now about 5 seconds for MSN to pop up with Kapersky.

And then it slowed down back to 15-20 seconds and I've figured out why but I can't explain it. I have a HTC touch HD and i normally plug it into a dock when I get home. With the HTC plugged in and being sync'd to windows mobile centre it actually slows the start up. Why is this though? I can't explain it.

Anyway, back to the Imaging process. I went to Kapersky and there was an option in my antivirus to create a backup image. Will definately try it out tonight!
