Except people like Fox, who thought it was bad enough to send it back and spend another £100 on a 570.

It's a great card, but there is no sense in lying about it's downfalls. It is hot, and it is noisy - let the OP decide whether this is acceptable for them rather than telling them the issue doesn't exist.

Quite simply, if power consumption, heat and noise aren't important to you then the 480 is a good buy. If they are, then stick with the flashed 6950, there is nothing in it performance wise.

Yes, power consumption on the 400 series is high, i dont doubt that at all. But the heat/noise thing can be fixed easily, i run two 470's overclocked at 750/1500/1674. in a case with decent air flow and a custom fan profile which keeps them at 31-32c idle, 66-64c in game. And tbh, people on an overclocking forum worrying about power usage, yet running highly overclocked cpu's. Last time i checked, this wasnt a greenpeace affiliated forum.

They sound like a jet taking off under load with the stock cooler, anyone who says otherwise is deaf.

Unless you add an after market cooler they're hot and noisy, plus there's nothing you can do about the power consumption. They may be a little faster in some things than a flashed 6950 but they also have plenty of negatives.

If I could have a CPU the same speed and price whilst using half the power and running cooler I would :p

Well, i can only go by my own experience, 470 sli, keep the fan speed below 60% and theyre not loud, yes above 60% they can be. But i game with noise cancelling headphones so i dont even notice fan speed. Power consumption cant be fixed by the end user, but i own a decent case, (lian li a70f) good airflow to the gpu area, and very good pcie slot spacing on my mobo, ive tried the cards in my second rig, (akasa eclipse 62 case) they run 10c higher due to the restricted intake on that case, ive seen ati 6970 owners on this forum reporting higher temps with x fire

Well I would consider them to be loud at anything over 30% fan speed.

The same would apply to the stock 5870 (and presumably the 6950) cooler though, the difference being you can run those at 25% and still keep them cool enough.

Really depends how sensitive people are to noise. Even with a custom fan profile to make the 480's fan ramp up quicker I still found it very noisy when I used one. Haven't tried a 69xx card to compare.

Think people are taking issue with that. First its stated like its fact that the 480 isn't noisy then its retracted to be a personal opinion :/

Also graphics card seemingly use more than twice the power of even high end cpus. If one is going to clock their cpu, then probably they would clock their gpu and power usage would rise accordingly.

EDIT. OP just get both and return the one you don't like. Must be quite easy to do as you live quite near ocuk :p

The 480 is definitely a noisy hot beast but then so is my entire rig as it's pumping out some major mhz LOLZ.

So yea doesn't bother me, the cards a beast. So is the 6970.

Go with the 480 though, use the £5 saved on beers lol.

I probably will end up with the 480. The noise dosent really bother me because when im gaming i wont be able hear it over the noise of the game i hope :p
