so i go into HMV...

Think i paid around £16 for the bourne blu-ray box set last year from an internet only site. I tend not to buy anything in stores these days and i did all my xmas shopping on-line this year and saved a fortune (plus i went through nectar website to get points).

i see the bourne bluray box set for £40, i then see below it each individual bourne movie for £12 each.

logic?

to make it worse, the 3 films are in 2 for £20.

is that the same logic as my coop supermarket where i can buy 1x 2 litre bottle of cocacola for £1.25 each or 4x cocacola in a four pack for £5.99

I hate walking into any HMV store, horrible layout, overpriced and full of chavs who get in my way.

It's like most entertainment/electronic stores, they hope they can get the Joe bloggs of the world that are not in the know, unlike a lot of people here. E.g My friends parents, went to curry's brought a TV and bluray player, and they got a *free* hdmi cable thus making the deal sound good. But in truth it was £200 more expensive than from another online e-tailer, but they were not aware of the channels to look and buy.

Hmv are trash to be honest, they used to be pretty good with quite a well stocked range, now they just blatently overcharge or dont carry certain lines at all :(

was there not some bloke on the radio that was saying the reason hmv are doing badly is because of the shop layout?

i must admit i also kind of agree here , most of there stores are very unorganised ,for instance they put dvds and music in the same sections they also have a massive 2 for £10 on music cds and 75% of the music is turned sideways so that you have to pysically rummage threw it.

hmv layout is no different to how virgin/zavvi was?

i'd imagine most the the music if turned sideways because it takes up less space like that :S

everything is ordered by alphabet anyway? ive never had a problem finding stuff its just not competively priced

Hmv is turning out like how Woolworths used to be before it got the chop. Completely outdated and cannot compete with prices. Woudnt be surprised if it went in a couple of years.

Two years? I reckon it's going this year. The shops will close and it will turn to online only.

Surely you cant expect a high street shop with overheads to compete with an online shop run out of a huge warehouse with a website as only point of contact.

Thing is unlike clothes (where you would want to feel the fabric, try it on etc) there is no advantage from paying more and buying a cd/dvd in a shop.

Even game releases I would rather not pay £10 to get a game at Midnight e.g. early PC pre-order online price = £25 ... price in store £35. £2 more whatever maybe but near a tenner no frecking way.

Should be WAY smaller shops with WAY less staff. No need to be so huge.

yea the newcastle one is 3 floors each floor has tills...

do they really need tills on every floor?
downstairs is just gaming stuff and half of the floor is just wasted space.

top floor is DVD's and the same dvd can be in multiple areas wasting even more space.

the ground floor is mostly music but a large chunk near the entrance of the store is covered with the latest movies and games which are also on there respective floors anyway so even more wasted space.

it could easily be half the size with half the amount of staff, HMV must be one of the worst managed chains and if i had shares i would sell them as quick as i could

Funny that i've always thought the store closest to me needs more space.

I don't know how it is with stores in other parts of the country, but the store in the Mander centre is abysmal in its layout. It's not uncommon to see queues stretching all around the shop like a game of snake. As they have no dedicated or cordoned off area to queue, the line stretches through the aisles where nine times out of ten you will have a dozen people browsing the shelves.

That aside, I can't remember the last time i bought something from there as a must have purchase. The prices are atrocious, and the selection for some of the stuff is pretty poor. HMV and high street entertainment stores nowadays are just there mostly for your average joe who thinks the internet is some twisted monster.

But if i order something from the net it takes a simple click or two of the mouse. Much easier than paying at the checkout.

Is that all?

Until last week were were selling FIFA for £27 brand new or £29.95 second hand, NFS Hot Pursuit £27 brand new or £37.95 second hand and a few more titles too.

They've been doing that sometime...

My favorite spot was Red Faction: Guerilla about a year ago, £10 brand new, or £36 second hand!

They do this deliberately though I think, as the people who buy second hand will go to the secondhand section because they know its where they usually will find the cheapest games.
