I managed to order a ryzen 1700 for £206, brand new from an very large online retailer as a few days ago in a strange flash sale.

I only purchased it in a rush, in fact I ordered 2, first one with on its own, second one with a Asus prime x370 as ASUS are doing a promo for 2x top tier games when you buy a cpu and board.

total cost for board and cpu = £335.00

this is my dilemma, I am not sure I need it.

My pc currently is

Asrock z170 k6
i5 6400
16gb ddr4 3200

and
gtx 1070.

my options are

cancel all the orders and just buy a i7 7700 second hand for £160.

or sell my old board and chip, not sure how much I would get but lets say £130 for them together.

so the net total to upgrade would either be.

£205 for the r1700 + board

or

keep my old board, sell my old cpu for £80? and therefore upgrade to i7 7700 for £80.00

I am not a big gamer, I do like to photo edit and using a 40" screen with looks of windows open at once.

What would you do?

last option.. do nothing and wait till feb? ryzen+, and cheaper intel boards? if i did wait, would ryzen+ be more expensive then £207?

No, you don't need it. Outside of gaming and video rendering, there's nothing going to give your i5 a problem. For your uses I wouldn't even consider a 7700, since hyperthreading is most likely a waste.

Do you want Ryzen? I mean, Photoshop can eat threads with certain filters... but only you know whether you're currently experiencing pauses while doing your work :) I don't think the Ryzen will be a downgrade vs a clock-locked i5 in any scenario, especially if kick it up to 3.7ghz or more.

Will it age more gracefully than an i5? Almost certainly. 8c/16t will be excellent for general computing for a fair few years, imho. If you are a serious multitasker, or working on PS files with dozens-hundreds of layers, add 16gb more memory and an m.2 ssd.

Personally I wouldn't wait for or even expect price drops; Brexit will likely raise prices all around, and ddr4 has been getting more expensive for quite a while now. Zen+ will drop into your X370 board should you find your 1700 inadequate :)

You bought at good prices!

However if your not a gamer or need the cores for video/photo rendering work then yea you probably don't need it and maybe better off waiting for the Ryzen refresh next year.

Up to you. Because the refresh wont be as cheap as what you bought.

That's my guess.

Sell one and try one?
You can use the ram you already have and if you don't notice a decent jump in performance then sell the other ryzen or even the i5?

Maybe you could build a nice NAS/Steaming server or HTPC with all the parts you'll have kicking around!, Just need another stick of DDR4 and a few other bits...

I would be inclined to go with this advice. Try it to see for yourself as you would be the best judge if there is an improvement.

I do a lot of photo editing, using Lightroom and DXO. DXO has there brilliant Prime noise reduction but it is also brutal on the system. Thankfully it is fully multithreaded so I use a 16 core Xeon system to crunch through my photo's maxing out all threads.

I suspect you will come across situations where those 8 cores get fully utilised.

I decided just to post one of the CPU's back as there is no profit in trying to resell one on ebay,

I had a 6700k and a decent z170 board, when the 8700k came out I ordered on release date and a shiny z370 ITX board, it all arrived I rebuilt my PC had a fresh OS, cleaned up my case a little, had some fun overclocking a different chip.

Ultimately I got about £220 for my 6700k and £75 for my motherboard so the upgrade cost me ~£150, my games run ever slightly better and I can do a few bits of encoding a little faster, but certainly not a massive upgrade it but I now have a shiny new processor which is good for the next couple of generations and I had a bit of fun in the process.

Heres what to do:

1) Keep one of the 1700 and return the second one, not cheap enough to try and sell for £££.
2) Flog your CPU and motherboard ( ~£100 for CPU and ~£70 for motherboard )
3) Purchase the cheapest decent AM4 board you can find ~£70 seems to be the going rate with your CPU that puts total cost to around £110, which for the increased performance in general tasks, overclocking fun, platform headroom ie potential upgrade path for next gen ryzen CPU easily makes it worth it in my eyes.

So I picked up a msi tomahawk for £55 from a warehouse deal.

So im sitting at £260 for motherboard and cpu..

But im still scared to build it... in case no one buys my old board and cpu

Why would they not buy it? Price anything at the right price and it will sell. If it doesn't sell then your price is unrealistic, simple.
You might even struggle selling the new stuff too at the price you want. Even if unused, it's still not the same for buyers as buying direct from a etailer.
Not read the thread in detail but too much thinking going on I thought? Just build the PC you want/need and sell the rest at whatever price is sells for.
