Right guys who of you has the experience to help me?

I have just been given a Biorb Tropical Tank and was wondering where to start with Fish and plants?

The kids want a clown fish but i dont want to get one and it die the next day would be happier to get something that will be a little harder to kill (if you get my meaning).

I understand the water will need conditioning and the filter will take a little time to build up the bacteria needed to keep the tank healthy.

Just need to know where to start.

Any help would be appreciated ;)

Thanks all.

Was talking to The Mrs this morning and was told the tank would be fine for Clown fish witch is why she bought it. What would i need to do to get it right?

Thanks guys will report back to the mrs :) personaly im not that worried about the clown fish, just the kids want to see nemo.

First thing they said when i took off the wrapping paper was Nemo will live in there :(

Lots of reading for me to do then thanks for the advice and to be honest my p does not bother me so p it will be :) There is a bottle of water conditioner in the pack dont know what its for as i have not opended it yet. was too busy playing with the wii when i came home last night.

Thanks Combat Squirrel, W3bbo and fishfishfish for the time being i will be reading lots whilst i fill the tank and get it cycling. Gunna take me an age to fill the tank! Have not been able to find the adapter for my hose pipe :(

The Mrs just said fill it tonight and put fish in on Tuesday!! I was like No NO NO! cannot be done! the interweb says NO!

Finally got the shelf that the tank will sit on sorted!

I have only just filled the tank today and intend to let it run for at least 4 weeks before adding the fish.

I have set the heater to 24oC and the thermometer is reading a constant 24oC for the last two hours, all the internal fittings were washed in clean water before putting them in to the tank and the tank was cleaned with a damp cloth to remove dust and other particles.

I put the two packs of "ready in 24hrs" water treatment in and have also added a 1/2 cup of urine just to get the filter going, will be off to the pet shop on tuesday to pick up some water testing kits to make sure the levels are going ok.

only problems i see at the moment are all the condensation around the top of the tank, is this normal?

Thanks for all your advice guys it has been a great help.

Bigboy

Did you ever get your tank sorted/started ?
I ve just been giving an bio orb 60 but may use it just for my 11 year old goldfish.

Hey yeah, Its been running solidly now for about 5 months without problem, small fish are fine (dannos, plattys and tetras) but anything much bigger and you will have a problem. to be honest I can see it being a better cold water tank than it is tropical!

Currently stocked with
8 Tetras mosly Neon and a few Emperor
1 sucking loach could do with another to keep it a bit cleaner
3 Plattys
3 Zebra Dannos

Water is a constant 23oc and the pump after about a years use is rather loud got it sat on a cloth to soak up the sound a bit. I added extra gravel to the original stones as the tank looked empty and purchased some loose stones (white) and a volcano for the bubble funnel.

Just done my weekly clean of the tank and discovered 3 or 4 baby plattys swimming around the bottom :) so I must be doing something right for them to have spawned! :D
