ok so today i have ordered my self a nikon D5200 with the 18 - 55 lens.
and a 64gb sdxc card.
what do i need to save up for next?
im thinking tripod, bag, fish eye lens and a 70 - 300 lens.
I feel like a big kid i cant wait to get it and start snapping away.

It is tempting at the start to start spending money on lots of stuff, refrain !

Right now you want to take pictures of anything and everything, basically because it is new and basically because you don't know what you prefer the most and what you are good at. So you feel like you want to try it all, and take pictures of it all. Hence everyone wants a 70-300mm lens…..

STOP.

Go look at images online, which one impresses you the most and which one make you wish that you had taken that? Which one speaks to you the most? There is a difference here between the photo that impresses you technically and one that you wish you had taken it. It is the latter that you should be investing your money on. I find all forms of photography impressive when it's done well but I don't have an urge to go and photograph polar bears for example. So something like a 400mm/2.8 lens would not be on my list of lenses to get.

This is where you should start. This is where it will dictate the gear that you need. Most of the time you need very little once you know what you want to photograph, it is when you don't know what you are going to photograph is when you need lots of gear.

If you find yourself looking at more and more photos of sunset and stuff, your kit lens is perfectly fine for a while. Perhaps invest in a tripod and a shutter release.

If you find yourself looking at photos of insects and stuff then a macro lens or extension tube.

If you find yourself looking at photos of people then your kit lens could work for a while too.

If you find yourself looking at sports then you are looking at the most expensive kind of gear.

If you are thinking of the fundermentals basic stuff. I like Spudz lens cloth, clip it on the camera and you'll never lose it. A Rocket blower. A lens hood.

i think what your saying makes sense, i know i want to take motor sports pictures but i only go to the BSB bike racing and occasional track day with a friend. i like the idea of macro shots. portraits and landscapes are not something I’m initially interested in. i guess il play with what i have and then ask more questions after i have played around and got a feel for what i want to do and how limited i feel by what i have.

thanks andy, i will take that all onboard and find that book.

Im hoping my camera will arrive tomorrow as there is Mag motors this weekend, then mayday bike run in hastings that i want to take pics of then i have good wood in a months or so.

its here!!!!

Congrats, it really is a buzz :D

Just keep snapping away, having fun, and learning the camera.

It looks like you might be on auto mode atm, am I right? ;)

Have a play with all the settings, figuring out how iso, aperture and shutter speed effect your images.

I was playing with macro and doing it manually
