i got my 5870 replaced and it hardly sounds much different from the one i had first, so i can only conclude that every 5870 has a whine to it. Must be the fan.

much to my annoyance.. though this one seems quieter with it so far.

i've noticed a couple of other people complaining about it as well but i guess it doesn't bother everyone else so much?

Yeah its capacitor whine, its normal, and quite common, pointless RMA'ing cards all the time till you get one that doesn't do it, or does it but is bearable, as you could be RMA'ing hundreds.

Some times its not even the card that's making the sound its the PSU , ie the load thats being put on the PSU by the card or is the case with the 3 nivdia (8800 gtx ultra GT & GTX280) and a single ATI card (HD2900 pro) cards I have had with a Corsair 620 so in some cases cases RMAing the card is pointless

Got 2 5850s here and only heard them whine in ATi Tool. And that makes every card I've ever owned whine, due to the ridiculously high FPS it produces.

its fine, everything does sometimes you can hear it(when its annoying) when I first had my HD4890 it whined than a caught the PC tower, than it stopped it than

Every card in this generation has had capacitor squeal. I've had 4850, 4870, GTX260, GTX295, even GTS250s every one had capacitor squeal to one extent or the other.
