So I got my HTPC :)

One problem I did have was that my X Windows desktop overlapped the edges of the screen. After messing around in Linux for ages I found an option in the TV's menu for overscan (default is on), I turned this off and now my desktop fits perfectly to the edges of the screen with no overlap.

I totally missed this post and a couple above it, I think I forgot to click reply on another post when I was at work (using RDP), and hit reply when I got home lol.

I will have a look in the TV menu to see if I can find that setting, cheers for the heads up!

most tv's dont accept 1366x768 over hdmi, strange but true! even if youve got the htpc plugged in to an av amp and then the tv it doesnt work. take my setup for example - pc>onkyo 805> panny 1080p plasma (being a 1080p display is irrelivant for this discussion). plugged straight in to the tv i only get the standard 720p, 1080i/p and a few other options, but no 1366x768. with the amp in the chain i can choose 1366x768 because the amp says it can accept that input, but all it does is then scale that input to 1080p and then feed the tv..... so the tv still wouldnt see its native resolution.

if you want 1366x768 you guessed it - you'll almost certainly have to use vga.

also if you want a cheap silver drive, spray your black one!

Thanks for that info james.miller. I have just checked my TV as dlknight suggested, and set overscan to off, and with the graphics options values that I changed set back to normal, the screen now fits perfectly on 1280x720 so I am happy with that.

I think I have got 1080p .mkv files to play fine. Watching one movie I was getting 50-60% CPU usage using VLC. I installed Power DVD and ticked the "Enable hardware decode" in the options, then installed haali splitter, renamed the .mkv to .avi and played in powerDVD. The same scene uses 5-7% CPU, and if I jump in to a load of action the % barely changes!

I installed AC3 filter on the HTPC as some of the movies would not play any sound, that fixed that issue.

I thought I would try installing powerdvd, haali splitter and ac3 filter on my main PC (spec in sig) as sometimes I get the odd stutter in 1080p files. However a lot of the movies wont play. I installed everything exactly the same as with the HTPC (hardware acc is enabled in powerDVD too). The movies that wont play ball (which so far is about 75% of the ones I have tried, and work on the HTPC), will do nothing when I lauch them in powerDVD, if I skip in to the movie, it will show 1 frame, then stop and the sound will continue.

Any suggestions or thoughts on this? Perhaps I should create a thread in the home cinema section.

Installed coreAVC on my main PC to take advantage of CUDA acceleration (8800GT 512mb), and am now using Media Player Classic without any problems yet. On the HTPC front, I just installed Media Player Classic and thats working well too, not bothered with coreAVC.
