I installed both and ran the expansion, so here comes my question

Am i starting from the start of Diablo 2 or the start of the expansion?

The first quest i have is called Den of Evil where i have to go in a cave

I'm currently in a small rogue camp and its tipping it down

The expansion just adds a fifth "act" to the game that you play after you complete the normal game (and you have to complete it to play it). You start the game like normal.

What happens when you die in this? I seemed to lose all my items/etc...

Kind of put me off playing it, even though it was probably my fault /re the death :)

yes you do lose your items but, if you're quick enough you can go back and pick them all up again.

Other than that it's a fantastic game and fre to play online

That's the way games used to be in the old days, their were penalties and everything, not like the fluffy WoW driven deaths we have today;):p

When you die your items and gold on you (not in stash) drop as a corpse and pile of money and you respawn in town. You can either go back to your body (attempting not die on the way and collect your items and cash by right clicking on your corpse. Or you can save and exit, reload the game and your corpse will be lying in town so you can get your items back, you lose the cash you were carrying with that method though.

500g burned on wow tonight from 4hrs of wiping in a grp I knew wouldnt work... now to get that gold back you have to spend a few hours "grinding"

bring back the old style penalties

back in the day before wow came along in most mmo's you could ding a level more than once from dieing to much and losing enough exp to take you back down a level lol.

was fun though and you didnt get the "bad groups" like you do in wow because you were either smart and knew your class or you never got groups once your bad reputation spread on the server

Lol, how sad.

People just wouldnt play wow if they brought in an xp loss death system (That includes loosing lvls)

They seem to design games these days so that everyone is a winner. Competition is boring when everyone is a winner. You need some pain and suffering to weed out the losers to make the achievements worth something.

Boredom doesn't count as suffering, otherwise waiting for a bus would be a regarded as a mass participant sport.

Meh, the MMO of choice for me was Asheron's Call, which had quite strict death penalties back in the day ;)

The thing that got me about Diablo was that I didn't realise how much impact it'd have...My own fault for not reading the manual/etc.
