So i just re-watched Underworld and Underworld Evolution....(SPOILERS)
I've gotta say I'm astonished. I really forgot how good these films really are.
Where to start?
Cast
Kate Beckinsale is the quite clearly the star who fulfills her role brilliantly, but lets not forget the other big names who also put in top end performances such as
Michael Sheen as Lucian
Bill Nighy as Victor
Scott Speedman as Michael
Sophia Myles as Erika
Shane Brolly as Kraven
Tony Curran as Marcus
Derek Jacobi as Corvinus
Stunts.
Kate decided that she wanted to do most of the stunts herself and therefore worked very closely with a stunt team for weeks perfecting her moves. You only need to watch the film to see what a great job she does.
Scott Speedman also spent 3 weeks with the stunt team rehearsing for his final showdown in Underworld with Victor.
Throughout, the fight scenes are choreographed to perfection and the final showdown in Underworld Evolution is probably my favorite action sequence in the history of cinema(yes I'd really go that far). The is purely down to the way the protagonists/antagonists have been built up towards the final showdown, which does not disappoint.
Another brilliant scene is the one in which Marcus is pursuing Kate and Michael on the truck.
Locations
Locations are so beautiful and the set design went a long way to compliment it.
The Animation is phenomenal
The Warewolves each require 4 men to control. These are not CGI guys, they are genuine models. With regards to animation I can't comment much as I lack experience in the field. I filmed the animation show at my University the other week and found out that not one shot from Sweeney Todd was shot outside, 100% animated from the studio. Unbelievable.
Protagonists/Antagonists
Some of the coolest in film?
Antagonists
Marcus = Vampire with wings (model work is fantastic!)
Lucian = Head Werewolf
Victor = Head Vampire
William = First Werewolf
Protagonists
Selene played by Kate = Vampire, later betrayed.
Michael = Hybrid and descendant of Corvinus 50% Vampire 50% Lycan
The CGI is somewhat, believable.
When the helicopter crashes into the location where the final showdown between Selene, Michael, William and Marcus (When he is shredded by the helicopter rotor)
Strong endings
Both films conclude very very well, in particularly Evolution thanks to the showdown at the end.
Original and innovate plot.
This isn't your normal vampire movie, in which the vampires are killed by a steak to the heart. I loved the way Kate changed to become mutual (neither supporting vampires or werewolves) after she found out Victor assassinated her family and it was in fact vampires that started the war.
Post Production ties it all up.
Everything from the transitions to the color correction was done (looks for a new adjective) stupendously!
Kate Beckinsale in tight Leather
Enough said
To conclude, I don't feel as it these films get the acclaim they deserve, an absolutely brilliant accolade and one I'd highly recommend you all re-watch!
I haven't seen the 3rd but I''m so disappointed Kate isn't in it
