And the results are goood :cool:

How uneven was it? VERY. And I mean... it took me a good length of time at 240 Grit paper to get rid of all of the plating material.

I had about 3 relatively large patches which refused to budge for ages.

I progressed to a 400 Grit, then a 800 and got a near mirror finish with a 1200 Grit.

I read lots of different guides, and a big thread here a while back about lapping, mirror finishing (or lack thereof required) and techniques. I did not use the figure of 8 technique and just kept it simple with an upwards and downwards fashion turning 90 degress clockwise every 10-15 seconds or so. Same technique for all grits.

So, how much difference did it make? Well initial results show a drop of bewteen 5 and 8 degrees on full load (both cores) before my AS5 has properly cured. So good stuff, idles have gone sub 30 degress and my previous 54-55 Degree C full load on both cores no longer exceeds 49.

Just a mild overclock of 215x11 for 2.3Ghz so hopefully I have room for more before temps become an issue now, just memory holding me back ;)

Madman :)

I never heard of temps drops like that from just lapping the IHS? That's more like what people get once they actually remove the IHS :eek: (they are deffo mad! ;) )
 
True! The warranty is void now anyway! Saying that, I managed to botch my IHS removal losing a pin and resistor in the process, so wouldn't recommend it :) :rolleyes:

Correct. Having two pieces of metal in contact (in this case the main heatsink and the IHS) with each other is far less efficient than having just one, touching the core itself

yes me too, but what we want and what we need are two different things! :p

I'm gonna whack a little one together (e6300) but when it came to choosing memory my head exploded at the choices :D

oops getting a bit ott, back to the 'So, I lapped my X2 4400+ IHS' debate ;)
 
The Athlon X2 IHS is copper yes. (well, mine certainly is)

And I have read a few IHS removal guides, a few of which killed the CPU in doing so... no thanks :p

glad to know im not the only one who had a 4400+ IHS like the rocky mountains :( took some lapping to get rid of it all
 
Nice temps :)

My 4200+ @ the same overclocks runs at about 36 normal running and 46 under gaming load :D

I didn't lap, just got a arctic cooling freeze64 heatsink and used Vantec ceramique style grease \m/
