So I want a 360

I want to play MW3 with some friends, what do I buy?

Is there a huge need for loads of hard disk space?

Should I be looking at the new slim models or the older models? If the latter then is it still the case that anything with a HDMI port is RROD safe?

I'm looking to buy second hand FWIW.

Don't bother with the 4gb is my advice. Reason being, yes it'll do for MW3, but oncce you start playing other games that space will fill up quite quickly!

Second hand is fine, RROD has been in decline since the newer models have been released.

You can buy HDD's which plug in, so if you do go down the 4gb route, you can pick up one of them.

Once you start playing MW3, you're likely to pick up BF3 too, there's plenty of games out at the moment which will make you want to play them!

Only other warning about 2nd hand 360s is whether they have been flashed in the past (to play backups), and been banned from connecting to Xbox Live if the previous user wasn't careful about what they were doing.

Second hand is very risky, you have no idea how the console has been treated, it could have been left switched on, 24/7 in a dusty TV cabinet with closed glass doors, or as Nismo points out the console could have been banned from Xbox Live. They aren't that expensive brand new, if you simply have to buy second hand though I'd probably go for one of the Elites.

Yup, you can do this but it will format it and I think the limit is either 16GB or 18GB which isn't really enough once you put a couple of games on there! I hear you can take one of the older Xbox hard drives out of the plastic shell and use that, never tried it myself though.

It will do, at the moment. However with the future update in a week, Cloud will be enabled for your saved games and profiles, meaning these can be recovered easily :)

Just buy a brand new one. I got mine back in Feb and brought Black Ops and Fifa 11 with a 250GB one for £200 from Asda. I admit I used my girlfriends brothers Asda discount card so get it too £200 but they have since gone down in price so it isn't a big deal. I do struggle to understand why people would want to buy something someone has owned especially when it is a console.

If I buy second hand, it'll be from a high street store.

In fact, Blockbuster have a 20GB console for £69.99, but I'm a little apprehensive with the whole RROD thing.

They also have a 250gb slim for £149.99

I got my 250GB 360S over 6 months ago for £159 from John Lewis. Shop around and they're an absolute bargain when you consider the hours of entertainment to cost ratio.

According to Eurogamer.net the other day Sainsburys were doing the 360 250gb in store for £155 I think. And the PS3 160gb for £158

Honestly I wouldn't touch a second hand console unless I knew who owned it before (family or close mate who I know wouldn't scam me). It's just too easy to end up with a dud and then just have to put in hassle to get it sorted even if the store gives you a 6 month warranty or something.

That will be really handy, but if he wants to install games to the hard drive then he'll need a decent sized one, especially if he buys an old pre-owned noisy 360.

I wouldn't bother with a 20GB console personally, can't imagine it will be in particularly good condition, however if you buy it from a high street it usually comes with a short warranty from the shop, 12 months or something. They sell extended ones as well and I'm sure if it conked out on you within the first few weeks they'd probably take it back as a token of good will and replace it or refund you. :)

Absolutely my point :)

I use 60gb for the record, and it just about does me. Just.

I play MW3 with a 4gb Xbox360S and no space problems at all (with that said, I do have a 250gb HDD in the post lol). If you look around you can pick them up for £90-100 in the box (gumtree came through for me when looking for one locally).

MW3 will set ya back £30~ if you look in the right places (MM for a start!) and you're good to go, if you grab a one month free trial for XBL.

Alternatively, you can grab an older model a lot cheaper with more space, as I understand the Xbox hardware for the most part is very similar if not the same between the versions (make sure you get HDMI :p)

I wouldn't worry about future proofing, not at this late stage of it's development schedule. it won't be long now until we start getting a whiff of the xbox 3, get a cheap one, but a new one.

it could be 1-2 years yet.. it's worth it because if he ends up getting the 4gb model or something and decides he wants to play games that require more space then hes screwed.

Decent offers around at the moment such as the following for £199.61...

Xbox LIVE Gold 12-Month Membership Card
Halo: Combat Evolved - Anniversary
Gears of War 3
Xbox 360 250GB Console

It could be, but either way you can't future proof this surely?

At this stage in the development schedule, you should just aim for bang for buck. Why spend an extra £100 on a HDD, when you can pick up a 60gb for £50? That £50 you've saved now goes towards the new xbox for exampel, and 60 is plenty.

I ended up with a 250GB Slim in the end.

Found it for £229 with MW3 and Forza 4.

Doesn't seem like too bad a deal to me - considering they are both games I wanted, it effectively put the console at under £150.
