It was carnage

One memeber of staff told me they had to close the doors earlier in the day due to the number of people who were in the shop, the place looked like it hadn't been refilled for a week not mere hours.

Why do so may people think we are still living in the era when shops closed for a week over xmas and new year and go utterly mental with thier xmas food shopping?

People are crazy.

you should have ran to the meat isle and shouted at the top of your voice "the last chicken! yes the last chicken its mine"

What time in the night was this ?

I've devised a cunning plan to go take the parents shoping at midnight tonight in the hope that nobody else has the same bright idea :) this has me worried now though.

Me and my gf have probabally spent £250 - £300 over the last 2 weeks to stock up over christmas...the reason?

We want to spend time together with friends, family & each other. The last thing we want to do is go out grocery shopping. I would imagine a lot of other people do this for the same reason...

Yep. I tried to go to supermarket on my lunch break the other day for some medicine. I couldn't get a space and had to come home. Took me more than my lunch breaks worth to get their, get out of the car park and back to work....all for nothing.

Thing with that, typically I find although stores claim to be open "24 hours" when you go in after 10pm, the night shift lot are in and there are cages of food blocking up the aisles and the store is in a state with no stock on the shelves.

Because people tend to eat a larger amount of food on a day of designated feasting based around a very large main meal, and they may want to purchase the food for that feast that all in one hit prior to the feast day, say a couple of days before? ;)

For a mo there I wondered if the thread was going to be a resurrection with the lad asking out the checkout girl & it all ending happily.

Sadly not, OCUK still short of a Christmas miracle :-(

And if your friends and family have spent roughly the same do you realise how much food you will have!

It seems insane to me that people are doing thier whole 2/3 week shop in one day. I bought all my tinned/frozen food at the start of the month so I only need to pop in for bread and milk. The Asdas up here wasn't as manic but the christmas rush will well and truly be on tomorrow.

my dad was in sainsburys the other day and was almost finished with shopping when he saw two guys were fighting each over the last tub of celebrations, He said it was stupid, he broke it up and gave his one to them so they'd stop arguing and they just stormed of without as much as a thank you.

About half twelve to one am, it was still busy and made worse by the lack of stock on the shelves and cages/pallets full of stock waiting to be put out making a wall down the centre of every isle.

Happens most years, this year is worse because the snow and ice meant people put it off hoping it will improve...

Many years ago I remember having to break up a physical fight between two middle aged, middle class women over the last bread loaves on christmas eve when I worked for Tesco... That was fun.

dont know how people can spend so much our weeks christmas shopping cost around £150 including some alchohol and we have 2 kids :S

i think only about 40 quid went on alchohol this year though my wife isnt planning on drinking much and tbh neither am i.

weve had years when we spend loads on alchohol over the christmas period but when you have kids whats the point!

For most people it's worth the pain of doing one big shop now, even when it's busy - so they can relax over Christmas and New Year and not have to leave the house to go shopping.

If you just want bread and milk, go to your corner shop. Otherwise be prepared to have to fight your way through the hordes of shoppers piling their trolleys up in every supermarket just now.
