Well, having been on AOL adsl for the last many years, I'm finally moving to O2 broadband. The box has arrived and i'm due to switch over to O2 premium tomorrow. They've advised us that our line is only capable of handling 13meg download speeds, which I'm fine with.
Now I don't really understand a lot about broadband, attenuation, interleaving or whatnot, so is there anything in particular I should do to make sure I get the best connection I can?

From your side,
make sure you interior cabling is as clean as possible.
Use new filters and get the router as close to your main socket as you can, even bypass the faceplate and use the test socket if you want.

Okay, unfortunately the main socket is in the living room instead of the study, so I shall have to work on convincing my mum to move it :D Thanks

You'll have to convince her to pay BT a considerable sum to move it then. You can't move the master socket.
The alternative is either use wireless or run a cable. If your extension wiring is decent quality it won't make much odds either.

If you haven't got an openreach socket, i.e. it doesn't have connections for both phone and modem, get an competitor faceplate (those filters that come with routers are pants) and a decent modem cable. Belkin etc make shielded ones for a fiver (those modem cables that come with the router are also pants).
