The wife's away so I thought I'd fire up Company of Heroes OF - I load up and the game tells me I need to download a 40Mb patch, no biggie... but when I try to download it tells me it failed. Try again, failed - wash, rince, repeat.

I cancel the download and try to login - I only want to play SP so should got on alright without the patch - but the game won't let me login unless I download this stupid patch.

What gives? I can't play a game I legally purchased now? I gotta go find a hack to bypass this feature? I might as well have saved my cash and downloaded the bloody thing from Pirate Bay

Yep, ^ what he said, and if you feel the need of wanting to stay on the internet while you play.
Once you have Logged in offline properly, Minimize your game and then login to the internet.

Its just a crappy thing that happens. It happens to me all the time so no need to worry.
File planet has the patch and you can download it from there and instal it your self(they are just a self instal exe type file)

Anyone thinking of getting the from the pirate bay then dont, Its ***** of a game to use if you do it like that:p

I dont mean install or playing wise.

Its just a hasltle to set off the over devices and program to play it and to unplug certain things.
If i was better off and had more money i would definatly buy it, even if i dont go online.(I dont like online COH)

please delete if against the rules

Pirate version works better than the anti-piracy filled retail version, welcome to the world of modern PC gaming.

It's things like this that really annoy me with PC gaming now. You put asside an hour to play some games and you end up messing about like this. Must resist PS3

Don’t worry it’s not that different from trying to play some ps3 games online as well :(

Exactly! I planned a couple of hours uninterrupted game time only to be held up by this. I could have played something else but I didn't want to waste 20 minutes installing and patching that too!

Thanks for the tip though, I disabled my NIC and completed Market Garden last night. Onwards to Caen! :D

The changes made to the online system when of came out were annoying yes, it should really give you the option to play in offline mode where it automatically asks for a cd even if you have a net connection

would also speed up the online lobby, as right now u can tell who is online even if they are just playing the single player and have no plans in actually playing online

Relic's system's horrible... It took me a week to get OF to work because every time I tried to register it, it asked for my COH box code, and when I entered it they insisted it was already in use. That's right, it is- by me! I registered the game when i got it! It's madness that there's no "don't update" option for offline play.

After that debacle, the autopatcher kept downloading the GOTY patch rather than the standalone patch, which broke my install twice- no joke with patches this size.

Add to this that their patch downloader is flakey at best... But the real kick in the teeth, sequential patches. Instead of having one patch to download, you end up having to go through several in a row- download 100mb patch, complete, then download another, ad nausea.

I really like Relic, they've done some brilliant games, but this is just shoddy. Not Bioshock shoddy mind, but still. It would have been easier to download a pirate copy for offline play.
