Hi guys.

My live in landlord doesn't want me and my flatmate sharing the Internet connection that he uses (cutting a long story short). Now, my flatmate has a T-Mobile mobile Internet connection, which works well for her.

So, after getting withdrawal symptoms from lack of pc gaming (I've had to use my iPhone to view the Internet) I decided to try it out.

After about 6 hours of trying to activate and install BF3 from disc, I'm just about ready to jump out of my window. I can't even load a webpage, download patches, or activate bf3 properly. I've optimised all my net settings, I have a good signal, so why won't it work for me :(

As I said, it works fine for my flatmate, she can even stream TV from the iplayer.

Any help, advice or even mercy killing would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :)

Ask him to provide you with an alternative (your own line)

Was it part of the contract when you signed to move in?

I use a T-Mobile dongle for work sometimes, get 3mb down easy. Sucks the big one for gaming, but for downloads and browsing it's OK.

Bad reception area?

I usually get about 3.5Mb down and 1Mb up on my dongle, ping around 100ms. I got a random super speed the other day, ping of 79, Down of over 6Mb Up of 1.07Mb. Needless to say I was very impressed with that!

If he won't let you share his internet connection, which is understandable, have you enquired about having another connection fitted e.g. cable/adsl depending on what is already installed/available?

I remember trying to play BFBC2 on my 3G Dongle; it was playable, but laggy. They're just not optimised for such situations, they're better optimised for checking your e-mails and general web surfing.

Can you actually have 2 connections to one flat?

Note: it's a small flat in Eltham, 3 bedrooms, a shared kitchen and shared bathroom.

It's rather weird that my flatmate can get perfect reception yet she lives all of 5m away from me

Edit: it's not gaming I'm overly fussed about, I have uni coursework that I need to be getting on with, not to mention a couple of other projects that require an Internet connection. And I can't even get onto google without it lagging out.

Although I have finally managed to activate bf3, hence the reason for the long time period between posts :D

i have a mifi from 3

i think is really good

it takes in the mobile broadband then broadcast it in wifi

so i can use it for pc, phone, ipad and all sort

unlike the usb dongle you stuck with the pc only

currently paying £19 for 15gb a month

in the city i can get up to 7mb, at home (small town) 4 to 5mb
at work 1 to 2mb (all tested using speedtest.net)

if reception is bad you do get choppy connection.

just something for you to consider.

Theoretically, sure.

If the landlord has ADSL, see if you can get cable
If the landlord has cable, see if you can get adsl

Even if cable isn't available and he has ADSL already, you could look at getting a second phoneline installed.

Being a flat may limit your options somewhat but certainly worth investigating with him.
