So looking back, was the credit crunch a good thing...

..... for games, particularly console games.

I was just thinking of the number of XB1 and PS4 games I've gone through in recent years having owned the XB1 since launch and the PS4 a year later, and I've reached the conclusion it's been the most disappointing console generation of my entire life, where as the previous was great as well as lengthily. Suppose what I can't figure out is whether it was good for the last gen, or whether it's only really impacted the current gen hence why I'm feeling like its been a bit of a flop?

I know it's not ended yet, but there just seems to be a lack of new IP, content and innovation compared to the 360/PS3 generation... or am I just getting bored with games and/or missing out on things I'm yet to discover?

When you look at the specification of the 360 and the stuff they were managing to put out on it, Bioshock Infinite/AC:BF are good examples, they were squeezing so much out of the platform for such a long period of time I'm thinking that they've lost the plot since and that the tooling just hasn't caught up yet hence why predominantly we're just getting remasters left right and centre or pixelated indie games.

Sorry, in one of those moods today :p

Not sure if it was to do with recession but this console generation has been the most disappointing for me too. Whenever someone says this there will always be a poster who reels off a list of "stand out" games from this generation which always has me muttering "meh" to myself. I think the two stand out games for me have been Life Is Strange and The Last of Us Remastered, one of them is obviously a slight graphical update on a previous generation game so doesn't really count. The only other ones that I've enjoyed which were release in the past couple of years were Fallout 4 (on PC) and Resident Evil HD Remaster which again is just an update of an old game.

The PS3 and 360 are boxed up as I don't have enough room for 4 consoles so I find myself playing a lot of previous gen games on my PC, there are a couple here and there from this gen that I've thought about buying but on the whole I think this console cycle has had the most dull and uninspired line up of games in the last two decades.

I'm glad we're only just about half way through. I'm really enjoying it so far. :p

Obviously not as good as last gen where we had two Elder Scrolls, three Mass Effects, two Dragon Ages, four Gears of Wars.

Out of that little selection, we've had one - Dragon Age: Inquisition. It must just be taking longer because of the ever increasing complexity of making a AAA title - complex engine systems, more detailed artistry, etc.

The recession and credit crunch were not the same thing.

The inability or increase in difficulty of obtaining credit has absolutely nothing to do with the general quality of games.

Probably my choice of words to be fair, more the banking crisis circa 2008-2009... if that's the case why was there such a delay between the 360 and XB1 gen?

Ha, maybe I'm just annoyed there hasn't been any news on a new AC game this year then!

There wasn't a delay between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One. That was just the length of a generation, which is typically the 6-8 years.

Hmmm, can't really agree with that, it was closer to 9, plus titles were still being released on both platforms. Either way, its the longest gen I've know.

It was 8 years, and titles are always developed for both platforms for a transition period, it's just a matter of economics and size of owner base.

I think this generation is fine, we're just seeing less platform exclusives, which is a good thing for us customers at the end of the day.

No it wasn't because 2 years in we had developers shutting down left right and centre. We still do years on and what result do we have now? Only Sequels and HD remasters.

Many developers are too scared to release new IPs incase they don't make enough money.

We get remasters and sequels because people want remasters and sequels, they sell by the truckload.

Go spend your money on indie titles....the only way developers get to the stage where they can afford to produce new AAA IP is when they get success on smaller titles.

There are some developers spending AAA money on new IP this gen, see Overwatch, The Division, Watch Dogs, Titanfall
