Sigh...

My reliable 21" CRT just packed in. It was only a cheapo thing I got off *site which cannot be named* by some company called "Haier" but it was always giving me good results, and lovely colour at 1600 x 1200.

Today...its all gone wrong. Theres nasty jaggy lines on the screen, and dodgy blobs of colour, sort of like what happens when you de-gauss and leave a magnet near the screen (eyes housemate suspiciously). Anyway, after fiddling about for an hour trying differnet things to fix it, I've come to the conclusion that it has gone for good, and isnt coming back.

Right, so, what I need is a TFT (I'd prefer a CRT really, but they are a rarity these days) that can actually do something that resembles 1600 x 1200...or better. Less is no good, I've a spare 1400x900 TFT here and I cant use it, it makes me feel claustrophobic from lack of desktop space. 1680 x 1050 may well be "ok".

It need reasonably decent, accurate colour as I will be using the thing for working on, and also needs to be reasonably decent for playing games on. :) The less "tearing" the better. I don't need speakers or anything like that on it, just a screen please.

Oh yes, and a decent warranty on it would be good, preferably something that covers a reasonable ammount of dead pixels too. Feel free to reccommend me things from the OCUK store, as I'll need to order this today, and I know they will deliver Next Day.

Other than that, TFT's just confuse me, and if I've forgotten to add an important detail or spec, let me know, and I'll get a reply up asap.

Edit: Price? I don't know. I've no idea what price TFT's go for, for the specs I want to be honest.

Dell 2007WFP is a solid performer. 1680*1050 res, quick enough for most people to game on, good colours, good viewing angles. I think widescreen is the way to go these days. The NEC LCD20WGX2 is another quality screen and maybe a bit quicker than the Dell.

As for tearing, you can always run with v-sync on and endure the framerate hit, or try 75 Hz which should reduce the tearing. It is a problem with LCDs though.

Dead pixels is still a bit of a lottery. The Professional series (ie VP models) from Viewsonic is supposed to have a proper zero dead pixel warranty, so maybe look at the VP2030b, but it's not widescreen. Their widescreen models aren't part of the Professional series.

If you really would prefer a CRT though then I'm sure it's still possible to get one. Could look at the member market here or a well known auction site.

If you still want a CRT, get the new Samsung 1100mb.

It is an amazing monitor, and games look incredible on it. No TFT comes near it for gaming, as it displays true blacks, doesn't ghost, and can change resolution without looking bad. It also has very high refresh rates.

Very nice, trying to find a place that stocks the black version of it. theres no way in hell I'm sticking a beige box on my desk. :o

Edit:Hmm...but for the same sort of cash (including the expected extortionate delivery costs of a 35kg monitor) I can get the:

Belinea 102035W 20.1"
Viewsonic VX2025wm 20"
Dell Ultrasharp 2007FP 20.1"
Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP 20" Widescreen

....all of which seem to be reasonably well reviewed, and have what would probably be an acceptable resolution. Ditching a hulking great 1/2 metre cubed box from my desk is becoming more and more appealing, plus it has power-saving advantages. The Dell Ultrasharp 2007FP 20.1" is rather tempting, with its 1600x1200 native (what I'm used to using) and 4 year on-site warranty.

Hmm....what does this "colour banding" issue look like? That doesnt sound too appealing...

Just in case you still want a CRT mate, this one is equivalent to the Samsung, has a black case, and is available in the UK: ViewSonic P227FB

Im sure someone will be along soon to reccomend some LCD's, Im not much of an expert on them Im afraid :)

I bought the Dell Ultrasharp 2007WFP 20" in the end, saw the other thread about it and the pictures looked very good. The 4 year next day replacement thing was rather nice imho.

It'll do the job alright. :)

Got one of the below monitors......its the dog's ******* tbh

20" NEC 20WGX2 widescreen TFT 20.1" Wide AS-IPS 1680 x 1050 / 700:1 (1600:1 w Advanced DVM) / 6ms (Grey-to-Grey) / 4 Port USB Hub

Had it 6 months and still love it!!!!

It arrived! :D

No power lead.....again. :(

Is it a trend not to get a power lead with your monitor these days? The last three I've bough have had the power leads missing.

I'd be interested to hear your views as I haven't yet taken the TFT plunge. My 19" CRT packed up a year ago and I'm itching for a new screen, as I'm back on a 17" CRT (high end Iiyama, but made in January 1998!) :)

My heart says I should get the Samsung 1100MB, which has fantastic specs and none of the gaming problems associated with TFTs. But my head says I should get the Belinea 22" which is around £44 cheaper, a larger screen size and won't be so big and heavy.
