It came literally off in my hands. Im admitedly driving an old Peugot 405 Diesel Turbo but its in mint condition (or i thought it was). Literally, i went from first to second and the whole leaver came away in my hands! - scary momment.

I pulled in to a drive and pulled back the leather gaiter to reveal that the actual steel rod had sheared from the ball housing. - So, now im screwed. The old Haynes manual would have me believe its a two spanner job to replace but somehow...... i think not.

Why do froggies have to make cars out of frickin cheese.

I'm sure someone posted a pic on here ages ago of them holding the entire gear lever from their mk5 Astra or something :D

Could have been worse

The box exploded in my MK1 Escort on the way to Luton Airport leaving the gear lever in my hand and bits of the box all over the motorway

That wasn't a 2 spanner job I can tell you now

How much is left protruding?

I'm laughing hard.. and even harder at the thought of you doing a spirited 1st to 2nd gear change in your Pug 405 Derv only to have it snap off in your hand leaving you with a bewildered facial expression.

Comedy!

second isnt a bad gear for it to snap off, you can drive somewhere. if it snapped off in 5th the car wouldnt be able to be moved under its own power.

I replaced my gear stick on my old Citroen ZX a few years back, and that was certainly very easy to swap out :) From under the car, it was a case of disconnecting it from the gear linkage directly below where the stick comes out of the car, undo a handful of nuts and it slotted directly down.

I wouldn't have thought that a Pug 405 would be all that different since they were probably made in the same era.
