Hey guys

Just got home from my purchase of a D5100, can anyone give me any advise on the best way to get to grips with the camera and photography?

I'm going to read the manual and have a rummage around the Internet, do any of you have any hints and tips for a complete beginner?

For me watched a few photography channels on YouTube, namely FroKnowsPhoto, AdoramaTv, digitalrevcom. There are loads more I like as well but that should be enough to get you started :)

I'll 2nd what Guitarman said above RE: fro etc, but remember digital is cheap to shoot so go out and have a play !, try different things/settings and find out what works and doesn't and above all have fun with it. :-)

Regards Simon

Understand the basics of photography. What Aperture is, what shutter speed is, what ISO/ASA is, What Focal length is...then...

Shoot, Shoot, Shoot...and...Shoot!

I've not read it myself but understanding exposure by bryan peterson is meant to be really good for beginners.

I'm reading this at the moment, really good so far. Having spent the past 4 months mainly in aperture priority mode, I've gained confidence to shoot in manual (auto focus of course).

I would echo the above regarding FroKnowsPhoto.com. Really good tutorials aimed at beginners and up. Really likeable on screen persona too which makes them enjoyable too.
