So now that Ublock is dead, what do?

I'm loving Firefox atm. It's so obviously free of nonsense like Chrome's crap. I still have to use Chrome for *cough* certain websites because they won't open on FF, which just highlights what a pile of crap the internet has become without all the adblocking stuff. Popups galore too. Fortunately I only visit those sites once or twice a month.

It's also piqued my interest in ratcheting my privacy up a bit. I'm not keen on being a product and being manipulated to see stuff I might not be interested in.

uBlock Origin seems to be working for me on Edge or is it just looking like it is and I have several questions to answer to a soon-to-be furious wife?

i.e. is it Chrome where it's stuffed or browsers using Chromium as a ... whatever browsers use Chromium for (backbone? inter bone?)

Chrome and Chromium are slightly different things. What Google mandates on Chrome (Google's web browser) doesn't always carry over to Chromium (open source project). Essentially, Chromium is the "core" web browser that Chrome is based upon.

The same goes for Edge and a few others. Chromium is the open source base, then Chrome/Edge/etc. are built on top.

I use a DNS based blocker and haven't looked back. It shocks me when I use a laptop outside of my network how many ads there are!
I try to use the free tools from AdGuard at home, and it does a decent job. It's not 100% effective, and some things slip through, but it's much better than not having anything. It's truly shocking how many ads are online these days. If I'm on any other device away from home, or something not connected to my home network, it's a constant bombardment of ads.

Edge at work and Safari on my Mac. When I have a personal Windows machine I use Edge.

You can use private DNS on your phone and DoH to AdGuard's own DNS servers when you're outside of your own network. It's a godsend. dns.adguard.com

Yeah, you're right. To be honest, I've put it off long enough. I'll have to revisit some things. At the time when I first set AdGuard, AdBlock, and DNS settings up on my home network and phones, I was facing problems. I couldn't get the settings right, there were slowdowns and unresponsive websites, etc, but as it was only on the laptop and mobile, I figured at the time it was user error. I never really tried again as everything through the router worked fine.
