new machine, thought id install xp sp2. mostly ok but... internet explorer sometimes hangs for no good reason, then starts responding a minute later, or bombs completely and shuts down all IE windows. happens more so when an image on the page takes a while to load.

then theres windows media player, i tried to get it to open all my video files with the media player classic that it comes with, but yet it still asks me which program i want to use to open the video file

so what reason is there to keep this pile of crap, instead of going back to windows 2000

Have you tried using VLC media player for your media files, or using e.g. firefox or opera internet browsers?

it makes no difference, i click a video link and it streams to mediaplayer 9 instead of downloading to temp and then playing. if i click a video file it asks me what program i want to use, even when i set it to use the old media player.

Tried ticking the box that says "always use this program to open files of this type"?

Also the probs you're having with IE could be a virus problem, or some software conflicts on your PC. What virus programs etc are you using.... and please don't say Norton?

yes i ticked that box!!!

pc is a fresh install, no chance at all for viruses to get on it.

actually, the moment your PC is connected to the internet, you are at risk of being infected.

download AVG free, its decent, uses little resourses and scans quickly.

Never had this problem. Works great on my PC. It is not a pile of Crap. Must be some problem on your pc.

You could try manually changing the file associations by going to Explorer, Tools, Folder Options and FIle Types. A slightly laborious task but a) at least you'll be sure that they are right and b) its easier than the alternative (reg hacking in HKCR)

Looks to me like your looking for a reason not to like XP?!?!
All the problems you have described are down to 'USER' error and can be easily fixed!!
Give it a little time and you will see XP is as good/stable as 2000 with some nice added media features :D

P.S) Not sure why you are using IE still? It sucks! Get either Opera or Firefox!
Also as suggested V L C is a superb media player that 'will' play pretty much ANYTHING you throw at it! You just need to sort out file associations to get VLC opening all video/media files

I think IE is fine. Works for me.
Have you used Firefox mate?

If you like IE i'm sure Firefox can trump it in almost any way with its extensions, tabs and superior load engine ;)
