So this happened... Small PC fire

Thanks Athlon, i have registered my board but the warranty from that page is only for notebooks and systems, not for motherboards etc. however, i finally found an email that i can contact them on. I sent a couple of pictures and a request for replacement, lets see what happens.

Register.msi.com are for all MSI products like notebooks, systems, graphic cards etc. I had been registered my graphic card MSI GTX 970 on the same page.

Quite concerning as I am using that exact same board for my WC system. It's also my second as my first stopped posting after a year.

If you have no luck getting in contact then try them on their UK Facebook.

Also on their Facebook it says that their location is Uxbridge.

Its a shame to say but I've had nothing but bad experience with all MSI kit, from £1600 gaming laptop to motherboards and gfx cards. All died in warranty, replaced but I will never use the brand again.

Good idea, not thought of using their Facebook page. Some pictures of a burnt motherboard ought to get their attention. Good idea, thanks

Quite a liberal idea of Uxbridge but they are pretty close, not sure if that's really going to be of any benefit though.

Friend of mine has also had trouble with them recently. Definitely moving to gigabyte, and only buying from ocuk. Much better warranty services then.

Msi replied to my email this morning. They said i had to return to the netherlands, which seems crazy if they have a UK RMA base. Secondly, they wanted a proof of purchase, so i gave them what i can from my original purchase.

If they dont accept i think i'll post on their facebook page. If it was just a normal failure then i wouldn't fuss, but the dam thing was on fire...

I suspect you're out of luck as you bought it second hand. The warranty isn't usually transferable. You may get something as a gesture of goodwill, but I wouldn't be holding my breath.

I was thinking the same thing to begin with but others here suggested it was worthwhile so i am giving it a go.

Got another prompt reply. RMA confirmed!

I have to send it to the netherlands as UK RMA is only for Laptops i was told.

Still, what a result, not bad service from MSI depsite it being a mission to find an email to contact them on.

doesn't matter if its had a thousand owners,if its within warranty the rma will be honoured as they go from the motherboard serial number not by how many owners

When I posted my PSU to Corsair in the Netherlands the cheapest company by quite some margin was ipostparcels, so they are worth a look: http://www.ipostparcels.com

Out of interest, what CPU cooler did you have?

VRMs do seem to go bang in spectacular fashion, I had an old 1156 motherboard with faulty VRMs take out two PSUs, the original and then a replacement as I thought it was the PSU at fault. Thankfully everything else (apart from the board obviously) was fine.

Thanks, they do look good but as i have no car and live on campus accommodation my posting options are limited. I have a UPS drop off close by though and that will cost £15 to ship. Thats not too bad.

Well the whole build was watercooled, so i had an XSPC Raystorm block for the cpu.

I have not checked PSU or RAM yet. Not sure how to test PSU properly without risk of damaging something :-/ Borrowing hardware at the moment so dont want to damage anything.

I'm sure they'll collect but I understand the issues. I assume you checked for leaks? lol

You could test the PSU using the paperclip method to start with, then at least you know if it powers on and the fan spins. As for risking damaging hardware, I know that feeling I was in the same position and ended up just RMAing it anyways. The only disadvantage with that especially when doing it through a retailer is the restocking fees most charge if it isn't faulty. If you have a Corsair though, they tend not to test the unit and just post you a new one (at least in my experience).

ive only rma'd with gigabyte and asrock and both times they asked for serial number so idk

..and you sounded so certain earlier! lol

haha

I know its something they check to see if its in warranty,i don't think they are fussed how many owners but I havnt dealt with msi

Hi all,

Its been a couple of days now, and im running on borrowed hardware but i need to make some progress what my i might do and thought i might write my ideas here and anybody can chip in with what they think.

So obviously i need a new motherboard. My options seem to be:

1) Use borrowed board until Mpower replacement. Thus keep cpu, but run the risk of futher failures on a board i dont trust so much anymore. I also wont have to re-install anything.

2) Buy a gigabyte board:
a) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-488-GI
or
b) http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-493-GI

This would mean i should do a fresh windows install, and would have to go back to windows 7 as i have software that wont install on windows 8.1 (It installs on 8 which you can then upgrade to 8.1, but not sure if that always works), but i have a version of that so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. This would mean i have a more reliable board, with potentially an upgrade path or 5 year warranty, (black edition) but i would have to buy a new CPU. probably 4690k?

I also need to decide what to do with watercooling. I currently have a 420mm and 280mm rad in my 750D with the glass XSPC pump and Res combo and a raystorm block, fans etc. It seems a shame to not use any of it anymore but i also dont really have the time to reinstall everything, and my GPUs need updating soon anyway. If i wont get much money for it all, i think i should keep using it because it cost a lot, if i can get some good cash for all of it, plus fittings, then maybe it will be worth selling so i can change hardware more often. (But i am a silent freak so this is important too)

The last issue to resolve is my graphics situation. I currently have two 7970s (with waterblocks and backplates) and running a 2560x1440 monitor (2 actually, but only 1 for gaming). I have found that crossfire profiles seem to be few and far between in games and i end up disabling for stability anyway so i'd like to revert to high power single card. So i have been considering the OCUK exclusive version that they guarantee no coil whine on. Does this sound like a crazy idea and a waste of money? Bare in mind that i only have the original air cooler for one 7970 so if i switch to air, i will only be able to use one of them.

I think thats pretty much it for my splurge of ideas. Sorry about the text wall but just wanted to get my thoughts down on (virtual) paper.

If you have any input on perhaps what i should do that would be really appreciated.

Thanks.
