So Ubuntu 8.10 won't work... now what?

Hi,

I've posted a few threads here about Ubuntu 8.10 and getting it to work on my laptop from the Live CD... well, I tried, and it allowed me to choose the language, select whether I want to install or run the Live CD (neither worked) and then gave me this:

[img=http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/6549/29122008006nn5.th.jpg]

I have:
Windows XP Home
1.5GB DDR2 PC2700 RAM
Amd Athlon XP 2400+ 32 bit processor
Intel VIA graphics card
IDE hard disk drive (Samsung, 100GB)

The laptop is an Acer Aspire 1350 series, and it is around 5 years old.

I used the normal desktop version (for Ubuntu 8.10) and it didn't work, so I was wondering whether this is the wrong one. Also, is there another version of Linux I could install which would work?

I really want to dual boot.

There are no error messages in that screenshot, I don't see an issue. Have you tried another distro like Mint or Mandriva just to see if it works? I think Mandriva has better laptop support anyway.

Thanks for the advice

I tried it several times, at one point it went straight to the screen pictured and started flashing () before showing below it:
Broadcast messgae from root@ubuntu

I think it said something was 'unknown' as well.

I'm going to try Kubuntu first, then perhaps Mandriva if that fails. Could it be my hardware?

What's the problem?

You're at a linux console. Did you go for a full install, or did you cut any packages (like X or a window manager) out?

I downloaded the iso, did an image-to-CD burn. Then I tried both running off the Live CD and installing; both gave that screen above. I'm very new to Ubuntu (and Linux) so I was very confused at this screen. Is this the 'terminal' and can I run some commands from this to install it for me.

I thought when the disc was put in, most people's would boot to a GUI; I can't even get mine to that stage.

I wish I could be more specific than 'it doesn't work' but I don't have a clue about Linux unfortunately, and I'm a first time user.

Ah - I see!

It looks like X is crashing when trying to load. Try the alternate install CD... it's not a live cd and doesn't look as pretty because it uses an ncurses interface instead of an X interface.

I have just tried Kubuntu and it gives the same problem.

Which of these CDs would you recommend? It's AMD 32 bit, so would AMD 64 do?

Thanks for your help.

thats the trouble with livecd's the are too clever for their own good, they usually end up failing on one of my systems and have to force it to use vesa display driver.
when it autoselects nvidia i get a black screen.

Right, I've got the Ubuntu 8.10 on an alternative CD, put it in and it's given me a very blurred screen. I'll post pictures soon, but you can make out a red strip, so there's some kind of installation thing there... do you think it's a graphics card/driver issue?

Is there a way of 'ghosting' Ubuntu on, or finding another way to install?

I think your'll find your'll need 8:04 on that old machine.

8:10 has a higher minimal (graphics) chipset bar

It must have been the graphics card, it was all blurred and messed up (it's an Intel VIA KN 400 which is poor to say the least). How disappointing, looks like it will have to be VMs. :(
