I currently have a AMD FX 8120 clocked at 4.1ghz which is paired with a R9 290 Tri X (recently upgraded from a 7850)

I want to build a machine that will give me a good 3-4 years gaming.

So do I

A. Build a 6600k based system
B. Build a 4690k based system
C. Do nothing and wait for Zen

What do you think?

If you're building from scratch there's no point going for a Z97 4690K based system.

Zen will still be slower than a 6600k Skylake (per core) according to AMD's own performance predictions although you will most likely get 6 cores for the price of Intels 4.

If your systems doing a fair job now then I'd wait as long as possible. See what Zen offers, Chances are future DX12 games will have less of a cpu deficit. So your system should be fine for a while, As mentioned there's no point in going z97 if you're building from scratch now Skylake's around.
