So what if I don't want to spend ~£80 on a motherboard! Options?

Hi.

I'm looking to upgrade my pc, it's well overdue, still using a XP2500.

Anyway... Ideally I'm looking for a Core 2 duo bundle, but I don't really want to spend £75+ for a 965, P35 etc...

I will be purchasing a E2140 and do have plans to mildly overclock it, to say 2.4 - 2.8Ghz.

Lastly the main reason I'm wanting to upgrade is because my current pc won't touch today games, so I'll probably purchase a X1950pro.

Is there such a motherboard that will satisfy my need without having to spend nearly £100?

Thanks

Gigabyte GA_P35C_DS3R (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 & DDR3 Motherboard - OEM

£49.99

1 in stock

Currently in the Oc'uk clearance section.Excellent boards, will give you a great base to overclock the 2140.

Hmm, only showing 1 in stock, how long is it likely to be there? And how does it differ from the standard non clearance board?

It's an OEM version so you'll probably just get the board in a plain box with minimum accessories, probably a few cables and a manual.Should be brand new and in perfect working order though.

As far as I know you are still covered by the distance selling act so if you aren't happy you've got 7 days to return for a full refund.

@op

awsome board, just "upgraded" from the evga 680i
and honestly its soooo smooth

if you want to play modern games i would avoid a x1950 pro

although it is value for money, after seeing my bros x1900xtx 512mb struggling with the crysis beta at 19 fps below max settings, i reckon a 320mb 8800 gts is a better bet

If you shop around you can also get Asus P5K = 68.99 delivered + Abit ip35-E = 60+P+P.

anyone who cuts costs on the most important part of the pc should just be shot!

A £70 board will often perform just as well as a £100+ board, but will have less features, lets face it if you don't need umpteen USB ports, onboard WI-FI,HD sound and exotic looking but usually useless chipset cooling, then why pay for them?

Completly wrong.

A £40 motherboard would be no different to a £200 motherboard when just running everything at stock and dont care about features, overclocking etc..

Its only when your overclocking and needing specific features is when you need to start researching and spending a few more pounds on a motherboard.

don't equate motherboard costs to performance, a lot of the time a £60 board will push a processor almost as far as a £200 one.

there's exceptions of course.

I used to think that as well until I found out, and bought, Asrock motherboards. Our second PC has a 939 socket Asrock motherboard which has both AGP (which had a 9800pro in it) and a PCI-e (now has an ATI 850XT in it) slot for graphics card.

Great value boards that, in my experience, can overclock reasonably well.

Oh did I mention - they are cheap :)

Indeed, anyone not overclocking is fine with a 20 quid board, ECS and Biostar boards used to be rock stable always while completly bottom prices while I've had hundreds of them, even lower priced than ASrock.

The disadvantage about overclocking is that you need good ram and a good board, wich may in the end just cost more than simply a better cpu, I can't see buying a 50 quid board + a good ram kit + an amd x2 3800+ being faster for the buck than gettting a 20 quid board and a 6000+ and the chepaest pc 4300 RAM

For c2d It's a different story, but still it's annoying I have to spend €€€ now on a board, the reason I'm sticking to pD atm is because I can't get a good overclockable board for a c2d for (or below) 20€, while I got this board I have atm for 12.50 € ( b grade oem, repaired RMA board...).
Mobo's are the most overpriced things in a PC imo, there's no way people can tell me stuff like a striker extreme costs 200€ more to make than a p5b-mx or something...

yeah but to be fair it's the same with everything, a E2160 probly doesn't cost much more to make than a E6850. and an 8800 320mb gts, probly doesnt cost mch less to make than a gtx.

The best motherboard I have ever owned cost 30 quid, and has no overclocking features whatsoever. Boots first time everytime with no drama on a variety of CPU's that I've installed. It's my perfect backup.
