so what rts games are out there

massive choice there then

am i right in thinking that sc2 and diablo 3 will be the most gfx intensive ones there

looking at buying a lappy with nvidia gt 640 graphics should be enough yeah ?

Couldn't agree more!
Since Forged Alliance Forever lobby has been established the community keeps getting stronger and stronger as well.
 
Company of heroes is one of the best games ever made never mind RTS.
It's an essential purchase just get tales of valor stand alone if you only wish for full multiplayer content.

Precisely this. After the disappointment of CoH2 this is a game I'm glad I pre-ordered. Quite different to most RTS, but the depth of the army choosing and strategy (actual strategy too, not drag-select-charge).

CoH 1 with Europe at War mod is also excellent for base building, defenses and positioning - tactical RTS, where all the units react realistically, and die as such - suddenly bringing an MG down is a real challenge as it rips through your infantry.

Many an hour playing both of those :).

Starcraft 2 (and Heart of The Swarm expansion) - I've played this daily since release, Its got single player with an excellent story line, and very in depth multiplayer. Best and most balanced RTS ever imo.

Total War series. (Rome is my favourite, but not played Shogun 2 yet)

Age Of Empires series is also worth a shout, had many a good time playing that!
 
Also intereseted in RTS having just got a new laptop. Playing COH at the moment and will probably pick up some of the Total War games.

I'm interested in games that also include the need for producing and finding resources (e.g. mining, wood, food and farming etc). I seem to remember Stronghold Crusader and maybe AOE II from many years ago where this was a major part of the game.

Are there any more modern RTS which include resources as a major part of the game?

Homeworld Series
Supreme Commander Series
StarCraft 2
The first LOTR's RTS (Second is good too just short)
