PC froze when I opened too many YT video tabs to clear them from my subbox. Restarted the PC and then that sound started. Starts up fine, FWIW.

Cable against fan blades? Got an optical drive? Could be motor/spindle inside that broken.

Disconnected the HDD with no luck and definitely not a cable. Sounds as if it's coming directly from the CPU. Very weird.

With the risk of jinxing it it has now completely stopped. I readjusted the H80i tubes slightly and that seems to have worked. Maybe it's coincidence but who knows.

One of the worst sounds I've ever heard.

Do you by any chance move your PC around a lot, potentially a mounting could have been damaged in the pump?

That sounded like an off balance impeller to me. Bad water pump.
