I've had my current card (GTS320) for 12 months now and have finally noticed the lack of VRAM coming into play now that I've got STALKER and Call of Juarez. So I'd like a new card if the price is right, the trouble is I want something that will give a proper performance boost and also not obsolete in a few months time.

At the moment the 8800GTX @ £240 definitely looks the best bet due to both the outstanding speed and large amount of VRAM. But the size/power requirements are a little offputting (anything longer than a 6800GT will be blocked by my hds) and again, there is the worry of new cards coming out offering better performance for under £200.

So, any rumours doing the rounds about some new mid-high end cards (>8800ultra performance) coming out from ATI/NV? I've heard about a new GX2 card i.e. 2x8800GT tacked together, but I expect it will be priced too high and also suffer from your typical SLI driver issues - great in some titles, not so great in others.

I am not in a great hurry to buy as my GTS320 still gives decent performance with medium textures, but I like to keep my eye out for a bargain. I can afford anything but it has to represent good value... I mean, if something came out with the power of say 3x8800u then I could lay down £400+ on it, but if it's just something not much faster than the previous top cards then I tend to look more around the £150-200 mark.

New ATI and Nvidia cards are scheduled for release in the near future. 9600s are out near the end of this or next month, same as 9800s. ATI 3690s (or something like that) are out aswell, but i don't think they will be as good as a 3870 just because of the series numbers. 9800 will be a stupid price more than likely, probably nearly as expensive as an ultra.

With Nvidia's next gen (GT200) coming around then as well. :)

I thought the 9800 series was Nvidia's next gen offering?

You telling me that a couple of months after the 9800 there's gonna be yet another one unleashed?

I'm truly confused

9800 is a refresh just like 7800/7900 was. Wasn't untill 8800 that a substantial performance bump appeared.

the only 9800 card weve had a whiff of is the GX2, which is another example of incredibly bad product naming by nVidia, as its actually just (rumored to be) 2 8800GTS G92 boards sandwitched together...

the G92 boards should be thought of as 8900 series cards, and the GX2 should be thought of as an 8950GX2. I really struggle to see why nVidia reused the 88xx name, and then jumped up to 9800...
