Looking to move my ADSL modem to the ground floor on the master socket to get better tinternet speeds.

With the router downstairs the majority of my kit (PC, NAS, Xbox and etc) are on the 2nd floor. Looking to get a Wireless N Access point for about £30 and then connect that to my kit.

I'm concious about how it will effect my online gaming (PC and Xbox) will I see any differance in lag, response time, ping?

Response time has never been the issue for modern wireless networks (my wireless pings is 1-2ms slower than my wired connections), it's the intermittent lag spikes that can potentially cause problems.

Wired ethernet is the best way to go for anything that relies on a solid connection. Powerline would be the next best thing to Ethernet. I'd hate to spend cash on wireless kit and then find it doesn't work too well and end up buying more kit.

Alright thats the thing I need to look out for. I'm even more tempted to get my network sorted now. Running speedtest.net its peaked at 3Mbps and when the router is connected to the master socket on the ground floor, it reaches 7/8 Mbps!

Anyone here on wireless get a lot of lag spikes or should I be thinking about other solutions?

Dont want to go into powersockets as the good ones can cost £80+

I've been using wireless for gaming for a year or so and not noticed anything worth mentioning, pings are fine and never had a problem with intermittent lag spikes. For me anyway the experience is comparable with wired.

Wireless is fined for gaming, but if you are something as a file server or as a game host I would go for wired/powerlines.
Also wireless can be a bandwidth limitation so watch out for that.

Been using wireless for a while now, ok'ish for gaming but certainly not perfect.

Ping test results.

Switching over to homeplugs next week which should hopefully be a bit better.

am i rite in saying if u did get a packet loss,, the delay cud help u aviod been shot on the game server ...... bt when u shoot somet ul miss lol if its a fast moving game ???

Hmmm with the wireless kit I'm looking to purchase it will go router>access point>Gigabyte hub>pc. Might cause some lag then...I suppose the only way to find out is to get the kit.
