So when you start a new Football Manager game, what do you spend the first 2 hours doing?

I'm just about to try and get back into FM again after trying 11 on release and not quite getting into it.

Traditionally my starting procedure is to

1) sort out the staff. Trim out any physios, coaches, scouts that don't have good enough stats for the team in question and get contracts out for replacements
2) Get reports on all the players (inc all the youth). Any player with a star rating not good enough gets immediately released, any with mildly acceptable gets kept.
3) Sort out the scouts, get them looking for whatever players it is I want, often that under 23s in places like Brazil, Holland, Spain, UK, etc
4) Have a look through the summer sales and players available on loan just in case you spot a bargain
5) Sort out the fixture list, often i've found that the starting friendlies just aren't up to scratch to get a team ready for the start of the season
6) Mangle the training. I'm still not sure if what i'm doing is good or bad for the team but I usually make new regimes for during the season and during pre season. Pre season is very high on fitness, teamwork and tactics while during the season its a little more even.

Sorry for being slightly unrelated but it occured to me when playing FM that the game had no music. Dont know why I thought it would have music but I felt it lacked some muzac playing in the background.

Is there such a thing as a muzac lift type music mod for FM, or maybe I should just download some smooth jazz.

I always throw a disrespectful comment to my rivals manager to start aswell. Not really productive though.

Edit: I also try to sign Gary Breen as a player or coach or something :D

1. set up your tactic that you will use for the majority of the season
2, change match prep to team blending
3. Assuming your not a big team, get maresca on a free, adu yakubu, assulin or buy leigh grifths(dundee striker) for 450k.
4. Set training levels to high during your pre season

i do as little as possible first season, mainly due to lack of funds, so can't get rid of staff.

1) figure out who my starting 11 are, then work on a formation to fit them, as long as it isn't something silly like a 6-3-1 etc.

2) then i check how that compares to what my ass manager thinks, as it gives me a guideline of how much i can trust him.

3) Have a look through the summer sales and players available on loan.

4) if i sign a few bosmans/loans change match prep to team blending

5) work out new signings via doing 1 & 2 again.

if i havent been sacked 2nd season i look at coaches/training after seeing how things went during the first season.

If its the first time im going to go through the game I will set it up and put it on continuous holiday mode for a good 4/5 seasons. then come back check out who the young talent in the game is and go back and start a new one.

If it's starting a new game, I'll go through the tactics, look for some cheap signings, set up training, set the assistant manager to handle all friendlies, reserve contracts and below.

Is it worth picking this up now or waiting till the next one is out? Could do with something like this to help pass the time.

Well the next one wont be out for 6 months or so, and a lot of us still play it avidly, so pick it up cheap & lose some evenings ;)

Oh and to answer the original post:

1) Mutual termination of all sub-par staff
2) Find a new Assistant asap, and some good scouts. Offer any decent unattached coaches a job immediately also. Set scouting countries & assignments.
3) Scan the unattached & transfer listed players, to either scout or make an immediate offer on.
4) Set up training regimes & formation along with match prep - team blend.
5) Transfer list squad members you don't want. Offer to clubs ones you really cant stand. Release any poor loanees.
6) Flick through the main leagues, picking out known players I like to scout or offer for (includes loans).

And quite a few other things.

It's normally a good while before I click 'Continue'/Space bar for the first time :)

I don't really do anything just keep hammering next, but I was wondering what I should do to really enjoy the game more. Training was something I wanted to improve upon though.

Well you've got to spend about an hour or two assessing the team and the u18's squad to see where the team/club will go.

Throw a bad comment at Harry Redknapp and who ever is managing Pompy for funsies :)

Then hammer the loan and free transfer market to try and make the team mine as quick as possible.

The assistant manager is the best tool for the first season but tends to become a tool after that (as I found at CAFC) as they dont always have the best ideas...

Last thing to do is mould the team into my 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 formations :D

if my assistant is good and I'm unfamiliar with most of the players, ill get a team report from my assistant to see where I need to strengthen. Then look into it further myself (they can't always be trusted!)

sign some young players on free transfers, get some loans in and work some tactics. the one thing I do religiously is create some set pieces, you can score so many goals from corners with the right set up

i've never ever bothered with training or match prep or anything like that.

get rid of the rubbish, or try and offload some players with wages too high for how good they are.

1. Change the backroom staff.
2. Scout and buy all the cheap players first before they get snapped up.
3. Transfer list unwanted players and loan some out.
4. Cancel some friendlies :D
