as above. who is sticking with there current operating system or even thinking on going back to there old O/S and why?
Ive upgraded the PC to 10 but left windows 7 on my laptop as I know my diagnostic software works fine on 7 so Ill leave it be.

Ive been running windows 10 since yesterday on my Pc and so far have been hit with a ton of adware which ive never had in all my years running windows 7

I like the look of 10 but there's a few niggles I don't like.

Nero opens as a full page app.
I cant get cortana to work
I find it hard to navigate to find settings ( I presume the windows 8 & 8.1 users will find it fairly easy )

Ive not tried it for games yet. so hopefully it will impress me there.

at the moment my verdict is still open minded

Happy with 8.1 + StartIsBack. Supported until 2023.

I'll see what things are like after a couple of months.

Sticking with Windows 7 myself.

I would jump on 10 in a heartbeat if - was possible to easily configure things like the explorer UI to be more like 7 in both functionality and aesthetics, the UI in general was better thought out and didn't feel like 3 random teams had been working on it without communicating with each other, it had icons that looked like they were designed in the 21st century rather than the previous one, start menu functionality had a better degree of functionality, flexibility and scalability i.e. there is little in the way of proper group management functionality i.e. removing/moving multiple tiles at a time, etc. and the layout and scaling possibilities are actually a lot lot lot more limited than it looks on paper.

Oh and forced updates - just too many issues with that and several times just starting up my test machine its popped up with installing updates when I just wanted to boot it up quickly to check something, etc. and instead been waiting 5 minutes while it does stuff on boot up.

EDIT: I find it a bit frustrating as it comes so close to being an improvement on 7 but just falls down in some areas - if the start system actually had the flexibility it should have on paper, icons looked a bit less like someone put them together in ms paint on their lunch break and so on I'd have no reason to stick with 7.

EDIT2: Think I'm a bit spoiled by having used RISC OS for many years - which with the 3D/shaded skin update looked a long way ahead of its time and still has 10 beat for the overall coordination of OS/UI elements, etc. Windows 7 is the first OS I've used since that feels more modern.

Win 7 64 bit I see no point switching until more bugs and crashes and drivers are out for win 10.
Seems like there's xbox "gamer" types designing windows now ?

It's pretty easy to get cortana to work, just make sure your system time, default language and speech are all set to the same location.

Navigation is a little tricky.

I'm so used to right clicking on the start button to get to the control panel (win 8.1) habit, so I just use that.

I'm liking Win 10. I'm a fan of new things so I would use it even if it was bad, but it's actually very good.

Just need to get used to it.

It's the best of Win 7 with the best of win 8.1, with the performance and optimisations of win 8.1 and beyond.

my laptop is alienware (dell drivers etc ) so for now i am leaving it as win7 64bit everything is running fine do i need windows 10 probably not, my gaming rig i will also leave as win 7 64bit for now

For the gaming rig, your need Win 10. Not just Dx12 support when it comes out, but supposedly your gain a few fps in existing games too.

Keeping my PC on Win7 for a while until the major bugs are ironed-out and I have time to do a clean install. Updating my Lenovo tablet to 10 as I type this.

8/10 have better low level multi-threading optimisation that will get a bit more out of some games than 7 - especially if you are running middle of the road CPUs or those with lots of but slower speed cores.

I cant find where to download it ive searched

  • Time and language in settings > Region and Language > Install the UK pack. Keyboard / Speech / Handwriting.
  • Restart
  • Go to Time / language and > speech change it to UK (it will now be an option.)
  • She should now work for you.

Does that help?

I'm too stupid to understand the subtleties of switching to the newer operating system, what I gain vs what I may lose?

I run Windows 7 Home premium, with office 2010. I do very little in the way of gaming but don't really want to lose great swathes of my life hunting for fixes to get things running with the new OS. No idea how long Win7 will continue to be supported for. I suspect Win10 win be an inevitable upgrade for me when I need to do another build. Baring things packing up prematurely that wont be for another 3+ years. (PC must be 4 years old now)

I like the look of Win7, but in truth I've seen so little of Win10 I'd only be guessing what it's like to live with anyway.

I am sticking with W7 and W8.1 for now.

i rolled onto W10 from W7 on my main machine as it is the one that really can do with the new system esp regard to bitlocker and the extra securities. but the lack of hardware support is frightening. I can't believe windows hasn't build in legacy/compatibility features in the OS to allow for hardware to work.

issues:
1) motherboard chipset doesn't seem to work properly - intel Z97 chipset. and intel Rapid storage constantly verifying my raid setup
2) usb ports are not working 100% - unplug one device and plug into another port, W10 refused to install the driver saying its a duplicate device
3) WIFI simply doesn;t work. cannot connect to wifi at all
4) applications not supported - maybe not a MS issue but I would thought they should let these x64 apps work nevertheless...I have control software for my corsair W/C which doesn't run. over clocking software for my graphics card doesn't run....

not sure if these issues gonna be sorted out any time soon. I may have to go to W10 again and strip the key off the upgrade and keep it so i can install service pack 1 version (if there is ever going to be one) another time.

this new way of updating windows need net-connection...so I am very disappointed that things don't work from the start. how can i update my OS and bug-fix if I can't even get on the net from the pc i need the fixes on. I think they need to keep to the current style of windows update (offline version) for some time till W10 is fully bug free

I downloaded the newest corsair link for my corsair W/C and it ran fine with W10

what O/C software you using for you're Graphics card?

Corsair Link also working fine here on W10.

I always update to the latest OS, never had any issues once I got used to the changes. Lets face it the changes are generally minor and an easy learning curve. Essentially it just works the same.

I tried Windows 10 and initally it seemed nice, but I'm not sticking with it for now.

I thought the return of the start menu would have been like windows 7, but no. It's essentially the windows 8 start screen in a smaller window with a few options to move things around. If only the left hand side of the start menu was more customizable.

The OS is still swamped in metro apps and bloat. Some you can remove. Others you can't.

All the tiles are butt ugly, but no OblyTile to sort things out this time.

As a dropbox user I thought I'd try OneDrive. No good as the folder sharing sucks compared. I can share a folder, but the wife has to login to the onedrive website to see the share. Dropbox just syncs between shares. Nevermind I can just remove onedrive. Damn no I can't :)

I inderstand many love it and it's getting lots of praise at the moment (privacy issues aside), but I'll uninstall for now and try again when it's needed for DX12.

I see Windows 10 as a direct replacement for 8.1, but not a replacement for 7. Thats the OS I'm waiting for.
