I was going to read the big thread on New Vegas to find my answer but I dont want to risk spoilers if I do decide to purchase it.

I have never been attracted to Fallout 3, but I have never looked at it really. I love my role playing games and I wanted to know why Fallout 3 or New Vegas should be added to my collection? I know Deus Ex was a FPSRPG, but does Fallout 3/New Vegas pull it off too? Am I even looking at the right type of game to compare it too?

Everytime I look on youtube, I just find midgame action or something random, not real representations of the gameplay so to speak...so yea...sell me Fallout 3?

Many people compare it to Oblivion with guns..

It is not Oblivion with guns, I hated oblivion yet I think Fo3 was one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

I guess you could say it's like Deus ex, but it's more on it's own than anything. it's mainly about getting sucked in by the storyline and the atmosphere/characters/humor.

I'd definitely get it, you can get it cheaply now so give it a shot.

It's an enjoyable game, but if you're looking for a deep RPG then you're looking in the wrong place. The RPG aspect is fairly limited, and it is much more of an action/shooter game.

really?

I would've thought it's more of an RPG game, many many lines of dialogue with a non linear story.

Could I compare is slightly too ME/ME2 where if someone bought it to be a shooter they bought the wrong game, but that said is it a shooter with a good RPG element?

It's a "different" rpg to what you may be used to. I'm not sure what rpg's you've played, but you cannot compare Fallout 3 (or any other modern day rpg, except perhaps Dragon Age, Oblivion) to the more traditional rpg model of old, I think they will never be replaced.

Fallout 3, doesn't have "classes" for example, to chose or any meaningful party element, you a basically on your own(there are some npc that will join you, but just one at a time, and there's very little interaction between them and you), like oblivion in that sense.

The closet modern day rpg which resembles the old games are mainly made by bioware and you *could* include Oblivion, but it has no party elements.

In my opinion, both Mass Effects, both KOTOR(Knights of the old replublic) and Dragon Age are good bets.

What Fallout 3 does provide is:

Good story
Lots of sub quests
Great combat using the VATS system
Brilliant atmosphere (if you like the setting)
Interesting weapons
A good challenge

It's a cross between a great adventure, action game and rpg rolled into one.

It's a great game but not a great rpg in my opinion.

If you want a great rpg in the classic sense then you will have to look into the past a few years.

If you like Deus Ex, you will probably like this, it is more comparable to Deus Ex, then classic rpg games.

I am currently playing through Dragon Age again. I own ME and ME2 but never really got into them yet. Fallout 3 just looked like something different.

Hmm, its not easy to explain. FO3/F:NV are in their own sub-genre' really, whatever that might be. I think the Deus Ex comparison is partly right but in a sandbox enviroment. They are certainly not full blown rpgs nor are they full blown shooters. Either way, being a fan of traditional rpgs I still find enough rpg-ness in them to enjoy the experience, and I've always been a sucker for sandbox games that can be modded. That's the key really, if you are looking for a more linear experience they may dissapoint, it's not what they really shine at.

Great combat using VATS?

I don't see that myself, telling a computer what part to aim at and how many times to shoot isn't great combat. Doing it yourself is better.

I agree, but with almost the exact opposite perspective. I loved Oblivion, yet I struggle quite hard to get into the Fallout games. I stuck with 3 and got into it eventually, but NV for me has the same problem as it's predecessor, I can never fully get over the gunplay being so poor. Of course there is VATS to mask the faults and the games are not primarily shooters, but it doesn't alter the fact that a large component of the game is pointing the gun at a dudes head and pulling the trigger.

I looked at VATS on youtube and I think thats just put me off the game. It seems too computerised. Any thoughts on that?

You dont have to use Vat's, New vegas has an FPS zoom feature to make it suit regular FPS players. but if I'm honest, the vat system can be awesome as it can be funny when you see people blown up with grenades and dynamite :D.

It is similar to using the pause button in the old classic rpg's, but a million times better. Remember this isn't a generic FPS.

It's in depth, for example strategy may be needed, take giant ants or fire ants for example. You use a few action points to hit the antenna, and the remaing to hit the body. Click go and your shots go off, if critical hits are made then your laughing(skills increase the chance of this).

Killing mutants or other humanoids is brilliant, use all all action points on a leg and watch it fly off with all the gore! It is actually brilliant BECAUSE it isn't a generic FPS but a very well implemented rpg combat system.

If wish not to use the VAT system, then combat is about on par with Deus EX.

Humm...your talking me back into it slowly. Shame its still £29.99 on steam, Its cheaper elsewhere, half the price in fact...
