So whys XMP overclocking the CPU? Also whys 4.2Ghz slower than 3.9?

I am running an i7-3770K on a Gigabyte Z77N-WIFI. No voltage adjustments sadly, but I do have memory supporting XMP so I went ahead and used the profile for that so the RAM is running at 1866mhz instead of 1600.

Thing is that the motherboard seems to be doing odd things with the turbo speed.

Under normal circumstances (i.e. with the RAM running on the default profile at 1600) the system runs at 3.5Ghz, goes to 3.9ghz when 1 core is under load and 3.7ghz when 4 cores are under load. With XMP enabled, the system seems to fix on 3.9Ghz but the BIOS indicates the multipliers are set as they were. However looking in M.I.T it shows its set to 39 across the board. Sneeky overclocking.... not sure what the memory profile has to do with any of this but yeah.

Anyway. I was looking to tweak a little, I have a decent cooler (H80) and would like any free (solid) performance increase since I slotted in a 780 Ti and another new SSD recently. I figured running at 4Ghz wouldn't be unreasonable with stock voltage? Does not seem like it could harm anything in the long term (after all its only 100Mhz over the max Turbo). As a test I went to 4.2ghz and all seemed well actually, I ran 3DMark to see what difference it made (theoretically) and was surprised to see my score went down not up  which is just bizarre.

4.2Ghz; http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1728097 (9662)
3.9Ghz; http://www.3dmark.com/fs/1727909 (9668)

Will have a tinker around.

Sounds like it's being throttled, how's the temp?

Z77N-WiFi isn't a good board for overclocking due to the lack of voltage control, should be able to do 4.2GHz with no problem though, had Z77N-WiFi + 3570K a while ago, got to 4.2GHz.

Temps are around 60. The interesting thing is that the physics score is higher for 4.2 but the GPU score is lower. Which makes no sense lol.

Lack of vcore on the Z77N is a downer (system was a build from OcUK as well ironically lol) but not a big deal as I wasn't going to do any extreme overclocking anyway. Nice to know someone got to 4.2 with it though, I will try tweaking again and run the tests see if it was just a fluke.
