...which means i get to have a bike which is Tax & NI free...

Question is, i don't have a clue what to go for!

I want something thats going to make the experience a pleasure, and not just a case of A to B, which is what the current bike does really.

Budget is £500 ish...

Suggestions?

Are you actually going to use it to ride to work, or just using it as a tax saving scam? Those on the latter shouldn't be allowed to buy one.

I'd look at a proper on road bike. I posted a large reply a while ago on sports forum with pics.

Anyone who is offered something that is Tax Free won't turn it down, but yes, i do cycle to and from work, which is the whole idea of purchasing a "good" bike, to make the experience much nicer than it currently is.

Phil.. didn't you make a thread like this a few months ago ? :p

I remember you burning your leg on your exhaust when you got back from Halfrauds ;)

This time round i get to do it properly :D

I'm pretty sure the only place you can use the vouchers in Halfords, although they rekon they can source any bike you want

HA HA HA. A front suspension MTB fool riding on road :-/

For the OP, I'd look at..

Tourer
Flat bar road bike
Audax
City Bike
Commuter
Rigid frame/forks MTB with road tyres.

Not so funny.

I've been a courier and I used suspension. UK roads are not smooth and suspension is worth it.

I use a 4 inch front sus hardtail single speed MTB to commute to London and the only things that are faster than me are full race spec bikes on my 12 mile commute and that's because I cant shift down...

EDIT; If you can get the bike from Halfords- go get a Boardman bike. They are insane Bang for Buck and are only available at Bike Hut i think.

Perhaps if the roads are pot holed everywhere yes. Maybe complain to the council that the roads in your area look like a third world country? But I've rode quite a bit on a 23 and 28 tyres and never had a problem.

I ride in London... I have to consider badly laid routes, glass and nails all over the road, drains everywhere.
Suspension makes the 12 mile commute that much more bearable.
