I have a home server like more and more people do these days and thought it would be interesting to see what people have set-up theirs to do. I am sure someone has thought of something very clever which would be a good idea for others.

I use mine for;
NAS functions (sharing media)
Backup
Sharing family pics to each person via their Windows Libraries links (saves my wife having pics saved all over the place on multiple machines).
DNS (work in progress)
DHCP
Mail collector and server (work in progress)
Torrents

What do other people use your for ?

I used to have several which I used for all of the above plus a couple of dozen internal apache virtual hosts (some with mysql databases), some VMs, printer sharing and as a general linux playgrounds.

But now I just use my server to backup my two NAS's and it's only powered up when it's doing that. General tasks are now performed by the NAS's which are smaller, quieter and use a lot less power.

Running game servers for a group of us
Hosting media for all the computers to access
Streaming to xbox
Vent or ts2/3 server
Dropbox for my mum after recovering her hdd

Will probably set it up as a website/email host for myself once I know its 100% stable :)

There isnt much else you can do with a server nowadays, the only plus side is that its cheaper - minus the cost of running the rig 24/7 - speedstep is a wonderful fuction in this case :)

I need to work out a way of controlling the PC through a web interface for running certain servers and killing certain servers. For now though I use a remote admin tool but all in good time I'm sure :)

Along with the previously mentioned file sharing to other house computers, backup and user file store ours sits under the TV in the living room and is used as a DVD player for the TV, extra computer in living room with wireless keyboard and mouse and before Sky+ Anytime we streamed the Sky Internet TV through the computer into the main TV. Also currently running a Black Ops RCON tool for our clans Black Ops server and have TeamViewer installed so I can access home computers from anywhere.

NFS\SMB
DVD\CD ripping
Newsgroups
Torrents
Streaming (SubSonic\DLNA)

My router does all the networky stuff, although I'm rapidly getting ****ed off with it and looking to replace it.
