Social media site/service for MSc students

Question for social media pros. A colleague who runs two MSc courses has asked if I can help her; the students would like a portal to share information/provide input only accessible to them.

"Students want to talk to each other via media (ask each other questions etc) without teachers or other university staff involved"

Is Facebook the answer or is there a better alternative? Need a free solution. Thanks

Sounds like a forum would be better. Plenty of free ones available.

We have a facebook group for our MSc course.


I was at a conference for higher education teaching a couple of months ago, and the consensus there was to set up a group for the course with you in it, the group is going to be set up anyway and having the course leader there sorts out all the easy questions straight away.

Which ever is easier and requires minimal maintenance. Forum sounds a little overkill perhaps.
