Social network style website software

Hi,

Is anyone aware of any pre-existing social network type website software?

What the person is trying to create is a site with facebook-like features, ie profiles with images, messages, etc (from what he's told me so far).

He may end up going for a bespoke CMS in the end, but if there's any off the shelf stuff that's decent I'll show him.

Quite a lot of CMS's come with profiles built in. Not exactly the same because the profiles are not central to the design as they are in social networking sites, but could be a start.
 
Yeah I know that, but I'm not sure a standard CMS would handle the things he's got planned (which I don't know everything yet just doing a bit of research).

I've seen a bit about Facebook connect recently, maybe that could be a route to explore?

I'm no software developer though, I wouldn't be able to build him something custom - we're trying to find something pre-existing that wouldn't be as expensive, that's easy to style.
