Hi,
I have an older system with Intel Core i5-2500 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor and Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel

The motherboard died, but I was hoping to reuse the processor & ram to build a small, ideally fanless / silent PC, it will literally just be used for Plex.
Can anyone recommend a suitable motherboard and case to do this kind of build please?

Thanks

tom

Aside from some very weird releases in the pipeline, socket 1155 boards haven't been manufactured in quite a few years. You're best off finding a cheap second hand board - the entry level chipsets for 1155 were H61 and H67. Expect to pay £20-30 all-in.

Are you sure it's the motherboard that's dead?

If your needs are just basic then there are tons of New legacy socket boards made by no name Chinese manufacturers.

Won't find them made by big name manufacturers as its a ten year old socket without going second hand.

Cheers for the replies guys.
The first reply prompted me to have another look at what the issue is.
I've stripped everything right back so its just CPU and ram.
Here's what's happening.
When i press the power switch the CPU fan and PSU fan spin up for a split second and then stop immediately.
repeated on/off presses gets a split second spin up every 20/30 repeats.
What do you think this is indicative of? Where should I be looking. Could this be a PSU problem or something as simple as a poor connection on the power switch or wire that connects it to the motherboard?

your expertise are much appreciated.

I just did a bit of basic trouble shooting.
Removed the CPU fan connector, cleaned the pins and reconnected it. Now everything is spinning up fine.
Must have been either a short or poor connection on the cpu fan, i had just read that the first check is the CPU fan, if theres an issue there the motherboard will power down to protect it.
Seems to be working now. I'll put the ram back in and try booting zorin from USB.
