Socket 2011 mobo - no heatsink studs?

I've bought a second hand Asus Rampage IV Formula motherboard. This is a socket 2011 (original not v3) board, which I've never used before. I also bought a heatsink. On trying to attach the HSF, I've found out that the studs for screwing the heatsink in place are missing.

Should the studs have come with the motherboard or the heatsink?

Just so we're talking about the same thing - where are these captive threads? The motherboard has four empty holes round about the socket. The heatsink I've bought indicates that it should fit into these four holes. However, there's nothing to screw the heatsink into.

This is what I bought - Arctic Alpine 20 Plus There's no backplate included...

I've also checked the box my water cooled AIO came in (currently afixed to a socket 1366 motherboard) and it doesn't have a backplate either. Hence my question - I was expecting to hear that the motherboard should have come with one.

The cooler should have a backplate.

No the cooler should have the backplate AFAIK

Nope they shouldn't, Socket 2011 doesn't have a backplate as the fixings are integrated to the cpu retention mechanism.

With that cooler you have to take off the fan and it will give you access to the screws to hold the cooler to the socket mechanism. The fan should just unclip off. ;)

Look here https://www.arctic.ac/uk_en/alpine-20-plus-co.html Second image should show you what I mean.

Yup 2011 socket is reinforced with its own "backplate" so to speak and the cooler should have come with the screws that go into it.

That makes sense. It looks as if I'm missing the retention mechanism. There should be something where I've marked in the pic. Right now there are just holes!

How weird, not seen that before it looks like Asus have not gone with a standard mounting that all other SKT2011 use. It actually looks like SKT1366. You will have to contact Asus as I think that is a specific part to that motherboard.

It looks like you have an X-Socket mobo rather than LGA 2011 (I have no idea what that means though).

See here https://rog.asus.com/forum/showthread.php?26371-Rampage-4-Extreme-No-threaded-holes-for-CPU-fan-Cooler

Apparently you should be able to use a 1366 cooler but I guess the one you have is specific to 2011.

You probably need to contact ASUS UK.
Andi.

PS is there an Asus rep on OCUK?

PPS Looks like the motherboard should have come with accessories http://event.asus.com/2011/rog/X-Socket/.

After a bit more research it does look as if the board should've come with this X-Socket. From what I can see (and it isn't blindingly obvious), its come with the mounting plate for 1366 coolers. I'm just about to see if I can match screws up with holes...

Firstly, thanks for all the help from everyone. Much has been clarified! For the record, an X-Socket plate is definitely required as it contains screw connections that pop up through the holes noted in my pic above. I found in my collection a backplate for a 1366 HSF, the holes of which lined up with the heatsink I'd purchased. Unfortunately the screws couldn't reach all the way down to the backplate hence the need for the special X-Socket.

Buyer has been contacted requested the X-Socket so hopefully he can find it as it's a great looking motherboard and I don't want to return it!
