Hi. Been lent a desktop computer to sort out, as owner complaining of it going slow.

Motherboard
DFI LANparty UT nF3 250GB

CPU
Socket 754 MOBILE AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+ running at 800 Mhz

Memory
3 sticks-
1 x 512mb PC4000 DDR SDRAM (250 Mhz)
2 x 1GB PC3200 (200 Mhz)

Graphics Card
ATI Radeon HD 3650

OS: Win 7 32 bit. WAS XP!

Now I have reinstalled the OS.

But noticed ‘Windows Experience index’ as follows
Processor 1.6
Memory (RAM) 2.6
Graphics 3.6
Gaming graphics 5.7
Primary Hard Drive 5.9

The owner complained of it running slow. He had it ‘repaired’ a few months ago buy some little back street shop.
But looking at everything. To me it appears that there is a LAPTOP socket 754 athlon CPU in this Desktop.

Do you think that is why it is running slow?

Bear in mind this computer was built circa 2006.

Is there any other CPU that would fit into this set up and run faster etc.

Or would he be better of buying a new Motherboard, CPU and Memory ?

I am just not sure as socket 754 is quite old now.

Since putting on Win 7 last night. PC is working well. Starts quickly and everything is ok. Just that the CPU is just running at 803 Mhz so won't be able to do much on it.

Thank you.

If it was anything like my Socket 754 Athlon 64 chip and motherboard combination then it can 'forget' the correct clock settings and multiplier.

Anyway the mobile chip shuld be running at 2600Mhz with a multiplier of 13. If it is truly running at 800Mhz and not just there under cool 'n' quiet then changing those settings in BIOS should make a massive difference.

So what do I need to do to change in Bios,

As I presume different mobo's has different Bios's?
Or do I need to look at specific things within the BIOS to change?

Bit unsure of what I need to do to get this, what 'appears' to be a laptop cpu working in this desktop

Thank you

Okay had a read up and managed the following:

BIOS.

Changed FSB Bus Frequency to 208
CPU/FSB Frequency ratio x12.0

changed Vcore to 1.35v

Now under my computer, says it is

Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor 4000+ 2.50Ghz

Does this sound better. Just curious why it didn't do it in the first place

I'd assume the cpu isn't 100% supported by the BIOS, since it's a laptop CPU. If it runs ok after manually setting it, it's probably fine. Maybe try a BIOS update

Also, I'd run the ram as 2x 1gb 3200 sticks, ditching the 512mb stick; it will run in dual-channel then.

Cheers Bledd.

I shall remove the 512MB stick of ram then.

Also, been a while since I have 'overclocked'
is 'Prime95' still the main program to use to check stability of CPU / PC now I have it up and running? or is there any other good free ones out now. (win 7 32)

Shamefully, I don't know mate.. I think people still rely on that and haven't moved to anything newer

I'd set it to the stock speeds / voltages, then suck it and see

The motherboard fully supports the CPU you will need to turn AMD Cool & Quiet off for it to run at full speed though as its a mobile CPU it will speed throttle to save power. S
Also in windows set the power profile to performance and all will be golden :)

+1 for above...laptop cpu will speed up and down a lot more than the desktop. you could look at replacing the cpu but they are pretty old and getting anything better may not be worthwhile...

The reason the 4000+ mobile chip is in there (I think) is that it's the fastest chip that was available on the 754 platform

The best 754 desktop chip was the 3700 clawhammer, which was 2.4ghz

People also like the mobile chip as it clocked higher

Loved my 754 setup when I had it, about 7 years ago!

NA fastest 754 is a 6000+ and they still go for top money on eBay!
