Ello,

Does anyone know what the Fastest Cpu made for socket 754 Motherboards was?

Atm I've got a lowly sempron 3100+ and I'm looking for something with a bit more grunt , but I dont want to spend a whole load of dosh as the rest of my system is pretty good for what I use it for. Hopefully I can pick a cheap skt 754 cpu up from somewhere if they are still around.

Desktop CPU it's the 3700 Clawhammer core 2.4Ghz and 1mb cache.

These are quite rare.

Have you Overclocked the sempron? It should go to 2.5-2.6ghz which will be as fast as the 3700 - these don't OC much.

Yeh, I've tried to clock it, but my motherboard dosent seem to like it. I clocked the sempron to 2ghz (stock is 1.8) and the mb started making a screeching sound and the PC would reboot itself when under load. This was on the stock cooler though, but the temps never went too high from what I can remember.

I'll give it another go since I updated the mb bios. But I dont hold much hope. Also I think that the 3100+ sempron is'nt 64-bit and is based on an Athlon XP. From what I've read it was the 3200+ that were based on the 64-bit architecture.

Looking for just the cpu im afraid, I've got an AGP Gfx card so would'nt make sense for me to buy a mb and cpu. I think I'll go into one of my local PC shops that refurbish computers/sell 2nd hand parts and see if I get lucky. :)

Saul, I should take that link down if I were you. You can't sell stuff outside the Members' Market, and ebay is also classed as a competitor when you link to hardware.

Im fairly sure you can get mobile 4000+ cpus on socket 754 but they are pretty picky what boards they run in

You certainly can but they are very rare and as you said, extremely picky about motherboards. The mobile 4000+ is a Newark core that runs at 2.6ghz.

An overclocked Sempron at 2.5-2.6ghz will never be as good as a 3700+ simply because of the design differances. I had a 754 rig right up until October-November last year. It started of with a 3400+ 2.2ghz, 1mb L2 Clawhammer and ended up with a 3700+ clocked at 2.8ghz. I eventually sold the 3700+ on the bay for £128 which was the going rate for them around that time. You may be able to get one for £80-100 if you are lucky.

There are actually quite a few on there at the moment so now would be a good time to try for one. When i put mine on there i made sure there had'nt been any other's listed. Single cpu=high price. Loads of cpu's=lower price. Don't be tempted by the Engineering Sample ones as it look's like they only recommend the one motherboard for it.

Just a suggestion, if you were going to spend £80-100 on a 3700 then it might well be worth thinking about the following:

Asrock 4core dualVSTA and celeron 440 for less than £80 or with a E2160 for less than £100.

The beauty of this is you can still use all the rest of your system, you can sell your current mobo/sempron and recoup some of the cost. Both should be faster at stock than the 3700, but should overclock to 2.6-3ghz even on that mobo :D

Only downside with the celly is it is a single core, ie half a E2180 ;)

Hope this helps
