socket 754?

Beaten to it!

Yes the fastest desktop CPU was the 3700+ Clawhammer.

They are quite hard to come by nowadays and go for silly prices on a well known auction site, I've seen them fetch anything up to £130. Even the 3400+ socket 754 CPUs are going for up to £80 at auction.

Nice to hear from you again Hef.
Good to see you're keeping the socket 754 posse alive. :D

My old CPU:

The 3700 is much more stable with 2gb ram though.

Nice chip meths.

I'd like one myself but I know of the issues they have with 2GB of RAM :(

I need to stop being such a girl with my 3700 and whip the IHS off, could probably see 2.9Ghz with her then :p

Hi Hefner and Meths. Good to hear from you both.Sorry guys i am a traitor. I got offered a top of the range 939 DFI mobo and a 4000+ SD for £130 which i snapped up and swapped out my 3700+ Claw and Epox 8NPA-Sli mobo to be replaced by those. The DFI mobo was swiftly taken out by my crappy Hiper Type R exploding and has been replaced with an Abit AN8-32X sli.

I got £165 for my 3700+ Claw. :D :D :D I thought that was an excellent price. Still have the Epox sitting around but i must get that on the bay too.

I have to say though comparing the two set ups (754 & 939) with the only difference being the mobo and cpu, dual channel makes absolutley no difference whatsoever. I have benched this setup at the same clocks as the 754 rig (staock, 2.6ghz, 2.75 ghz) and there is barely any difference. 01 gave a couple of hundred marks extra, 03 a couple of hundred, 05 less than a hundred, 06 thirty marks and the biggest gain was Aquamark 3 with an extra 6000 points. I have'nt noticed any difference in day to day running or gaming. I always said dual channel was not what everybody was making it out to be.

I still have another 754 rig though based around a 3400+ claw so i am still sort of keeping the faith.

Socket 754 enthusiast here :)

I've currently got two systems, one based around a 3700+ Clawhammer (which I was very lucky to come by earlier this year) and the other a 3200+ Newcastle core.

I've got no solid plans to upgrade just yet as both systems are running quite nicely. I might even carry the 3700+ setup over to Windows Vista when I eventually make the move but we'll have to wait and see ;)
