Socket 775 closed loop liquid CPU cooling options?

Hi all,

As I wait for Haswell I am contemplating an old 775 systems final upgrades.

This is an old Asus Maximus II Gene with an Intel Q9550 cpu (and a spare E8500). When overclocking my BeQuiet Advanced air cooler fails at 3.5Ghz, the CPU overheats, so the system shuts down.

So I am looking for a better CPU cooling solution for this system. To be honest I had thought of the Corsair H80i but it has no 775 plate.

The case is a Silverstone TJ08B-E and limits me to mounting a closed loop liquid CPU cooler with a 120mm fan on the case's rear fan mount.

So has anyone got any suggestions?


I know its an old system, but I want it to last until there are options in Micro or Mini motherboard choices for Haswell CPU's.
If I overclock it will help.

Current upgrade choices for this old PC will also be a Samsung SSD and either a 7800 or 7900 series AMD GPU.

This was my old HTPC, that got pressed into service when another PC had problems. It will be passed to my son for gaming when I build a new PC later in the year.

Asus Maximus II Gene 775 motherboard.
Intel Q9550 CPU. (Currently stock due to cooler failing at 3.5Ghz)
Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU cooler.
Corsair Dominator GT 1066c5 2x2gb memory.
PowerColor SCS3 HD5750 1GB. (Or the HD4870)
Samsung F3 500gb HDD + WD 1.5tb Green for storage.
Silverstone TJ08B-E case.
Corsair HX-450w PSU. (Also have Seasonic 650w or BeQuiet 630w available)
BenQ XL2420T 120hz 3D monitor (1920 x 1080).
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Every time I look into CLC's there always seems to be some negatives.

The Noctua looks huge, would certainly have issues regarding hard drive space, and would like to use the hard drive bay to run two 1tb F3 in a stripped storage array.

So far the only thing that looks like it will give me freedom is a CLC, but new ones lack a 775 mounting plate, and not sure what old ones are recommended.
