thats what i thought but why so high a price second hand?? i acquired an asus tryker mobo and ram today for helping someone out and thought it may make a good second pc for the weans to use internet and watch videos on

You dont need something as powerful as a q9650 for internet and video watching.

A dual core cpu and cheap dedicated gpu will do that.
 
E5200 and clock it to 3.2 or faster is probably the most cost effective option if the board allows overclocking
 
I had a e8500 I think it was, codename wolfdale I believe. Man that baby would eat SuperPi in overclock mode. think I managed something like late 8ish seconds on the 1mb bench. May you rest in peace my dear friend
 
If you have an ASUS Striker then it will have very limited or non existant support for 45nm quads, the Q9XXX CPU's.

Wolfdales will be OK the 8XXX dualies, as will the Q6XXX quads.

Spending money on a 9550 or similar would not be wise if you intend to use it in the striker.

This is based on the assumption that your board has the 680i chipset.
The later 780i chipset can run the 45nm quads OK.
