Is it worth upgrading my CPU from a 64 3200+ which is clocked at 2400 for a 64 4000+ San Diego which I will overclock. I only use this PC for gaming and nothing else, so dual core would be a waste as it has minute benefits to gaming. I wish to spend no more than £100.

Would I be better off just waiting longer for a complete platform upgrade or would upgrading my CPU be beneficial to the performance of new games. I do not wish to upgrade if it is going make little difference due to my graphics card being the bottleneck - and upgrading my card is out of the question

Go for the X2 3800+, its not much more at £111.

It is slower and has less cache than a 64 4000+ and I do not see what advantages it will have with gaming for at least another year due to the fact that games do not really take advantage of dualcore. I really dont see the point as I only use my PC for gaming unless the 3800 is an overclocking God.

All im saying is if youre getting another 939 then you may as well get dual core as its more future proof. The 4000+ operates at 2.4ghz with 1mb cache. The X2 3800+ should easily go to 2.6Ghz and be as quick, if not quicker than the 4000+

Theres a few games already that take advantage of dual cores. Quake4 being one that springs to mind.

I just got a cheap 4000+ from OcUk great for th cash (3Ghz no worries). Then will upgrade in a years time when conroe plus or whatever comes out and conroe G1 is old hat?

Just a thought. Not much future proofing by going 939 dual cor IMHO.

This is the way I will go for now, untill all new games fully implement dual core. By the way how do the 4000+'s overclock.
