Socket 939 A64 Dual core - all gone?

Well it would have been a good buy, except the 'stock' turned out to be non-existent.

I am so gutted. I have actually ordered a DFI Infinity NF4 board because I thought I had snagged one of these CPUs. :(

When you get enough posts (250 I think?) then enable your Trust and keep an eye out in the OcUK members market for somehting from someone upgrading.

Yes, I have actually been registered on here for some years, I'm just an unsociable ***t lol.

Anyway, seeing as the board I am getting should hopefully allow me to push the FSB and certainly the voltage a fair bit further, I'm now looking down the opteron route.

So new question, Opteron 165 or 170 :D

Thanks for all the help

Seeing 4400+'s at £110+ with 3 days to go on a ceratin auction site. Could have made a mint buying a shedload of the high-end X2s when the prices dropped. Oh well.

Anyway - Denmark Core v Toledo Core - thoughts please!

An Opty will be harder to come across than an X2 or single core A64. AMD stopped making the S939 Opty's before they stopped making the A64's. There isn't really any difference apart from the fact thet all the Opty's have 1mb cache per core and most (not all) A64's and X2's have 512mb per core.

165 or 170? Well the board you are getting should support high FSB/HTT so it doesn't really make much difference. A 170 would get to a higher speed with a lower HTT so you've got slightly more chance of getting a good overclock. But it really depends on the stepping of each chip. My 165 was a very early version (one of, if not the first in the country - I had to ask a specialist etailer to track one down for me before they were in stock anywhere I could see) but later revisions should get higher clocks.

One problem with any dual core is that they put out a lot of heat so you need good CPU cooling and good case cooling.

Well I have ordered me an Opteron 170 for £135, it's less that I was willing to pay for the 4400+ and has the same 2Mb cache.

Heres hoping it clocks OK - really anything above 2.6Ghz and I will be happy, thats what I was getting on my single core 3700+, anything above will be a bonus, this will be on air using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and in a well ventilated Gigabyte Aurora case.

Hope I have made the right choice - I had to make a decision tonight or risk a disappointing birthday.

Thanks again for all the help/advice :)

It will have to be a very bad 170 to not get 2.6ghz. Most go to 2.7

I managed to get myself a 4400 off of Ebay last week as an upgrade to my 4200. Thought I might as well get one before the prices shot up to stupid amounts. Only paid £140 for it. Probably should have waited before sticking my 4200 back up for auction as it will probably go up in value more soon.

Am quite impressed with my new 4400 though, it clocks a lot better than my 4200, can get just over 2.7GHz with stock volts! :)

Just ordered an Opty 165 CCBBE 0615EPMW, £120 delivered from the same "auciton" site, from the States... did a bit of research before particularly on the stepping, and it seem this little beauty can achieve 3ghz!!!

As my current 146 runs at 2.8ghz, Im hoping for the same, but again, anything over 2.4ghz will be a bonus... and well worth every penny!!!

Wow, how come stocks are so low on skt 939 dual cores? Are they going to be replenished or is that it? The reason I ask is because I was thinking of upgrading my 939 3700 single core, but now Ive seen stocks so low I can hardly find any - and the ones I do are well expensive! I can only find X2 4800 for £200+.

I did find an X2 4600 for £160 - should I go for that?

Edit: just found an opty 180 for £200, would that be a better buy?

I was looking at the 180, but I like OCing them, and from what I read the 180's arent the best to go for, which is why I went fror the 165, especially with that stepping... 2.8ghz should be a doddle...

It all depends really with if you want to run the cpu at stock, or get the most from it - and your money!!!

Good point! Just out of interest, would an opty 165 runnign at stock be much of an upgrade from a 3700 single core?

DrMekon, expect to put your hand in your pocket again as Gordon Brown will have £25 off you in VAT and Parcelfarce will have £13.50, cos they can apparently. Came up with some crap excuse about 'processing through customs'.

Oh, and Parcelfarce pay customs the VAT for you so they can legally hold onto your item if you refuse the grabbing shysters their £13.50. Then if you still don't pay they will return the item to the sender and then bill the sender the money you refused to pay!!

Don't ask me how i know

FWIW mine is an Opty 165 CCBBE 0610DPMW to go with DFI CFX3200 bought from here. :D

I just bought an opteron 170 but cross fingers till I recieve it at home as I bought twice an opteron 165 last month and pay for them and after that both of the e-shops told me the price went up by £60 so I had to cancell. I still waiting for one of them to give the money back

I was also tempted to buy them from USA but I knew about the extra price....
