Socket 939 A64 Dual core - all gone?

danswan said:
Well I have ordered me an Opteron 170 for £135, it's less that I was willing to pay for the 4400+ and has the same 2Mb cache.

Heres hoping it clocks OK - really anything above 2.6Ghz and I will be happy, thats what I was getting on my single core 3700+, anything above will be a bonus, this will be on air using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro and in a well ventilated Gigabyte Aurora case.

Hope I have made the right choice - I had to make a decision tonight or risk a disappointing birthday.

Thanks again for all the help/advice :)

I think that's the same one I just bought ;)

did you recieve it? stepping?

Wow, how come stocks are so low on skt 939 dual cores? Are they going to be replenished or is that it?

I would go for anything you can get your hands on at the moment. You are probably better off looking on Ebay instead of retail shops as well because the prices are extortionate!

I think they have stopped making 939 altogether so expect stocks to get smaller and smaller and prices to shoot up even more.. Similar to what happened with socket A.

Hopefully it will be marked as GIFT or the declared value and contents may be different!!!

Even if it's marked as a gift, it's the declared value that counts. In America, if the sender doesn't declare it's true value then it's an offence with a pretty steep fine - counts as fraud. Customs have been known to open stuff just to check. Also if anything happened in transit, the transit company would be handing you a cheque for less than the actual amount it would cost for a new chip.

The reason I ask is because I was thinking of upgrading my 939 3700 single core, but now Ive seen stocks so low I can hardly find any - and the ones I do are well expensive! I can only find X2 4800 for £200+.

I did find an X2 4600 for £160 - should I go for that?

Edit: just found an opty 180 for £200, would that be a better buy?

4600 is better than 4800 for performance for money. PC Pro had a good review of the current cpus on the market with a graph that all reviews should contain.
it had a graph with the Y Axis (Vertical) as Price in £ and on the X Axis (Horizontal) was performance related to a certain CPU. And it said the cpu in the bottom right corner was the best cpu for money and performance. Apparently the E6300 Core 2 Duo was the best for performance and money and as you went up in models the increase in performance for the price decreased. for the amd models the 4200, 4600, and 5000 were the best.
it is better to get the lower model in the sections for amd and overclock them. ie get a 4600 and oc to get better performance than the 4800. 4200 oc past 4400 performance etc.

The price war with Intel Core2 Duo has meant AMD in concentrating all it's efforts on AM2 2 x 512 chips, the 2 x 1Mbyte chips being put into server Opterons where they make better margins.

Then you have a deal to supply CPU's to a major PC maker who previously only used Intel and that means Skt 939 has to take a back seat.

I 'bought' an X2 3800 from another e-tailer who charged my CC and then couldn't supply for 4 weeks. I did get a full refund in the end, but I'm not very impressed!

^^ Hehe i saw this and was gonna go for it, but wasnt sure on the stepping so i left it. Hope its a good one. :D

Did you have any problems with him/it? By the smiley I assume not?

None at all... I won the auction at something like 3pm, paid straight away by Paypal, then I'd signed for my shiny new CPU by 10am the next morning! Now thats a speedy delivery! :)
Was quite impressed plus the chip is a great clocker. :D

Good point! Just out of interest, would an opty 165 runnign at stock be much of an upgrade from a 3700 single core?

In single core apps / apps that don't make good use of dual core cpus it will actually be a downgrade. The Opty 165 @ stock is only 1.8ghz compared to the 2.2ghz of the 3700+.
