My current spec:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ San Diego 90nm (Socket 939)
Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3
OcUK GeForce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI

It runs most games I play fine - FM08, WoW and Civ4. But i've started getting into COD4 and it doesn't run particularly well, and I have to have the settings pretty low. I am planning to build a new system in about 8 months time, but I just want a CPU upgrade to last me until them.

What would you recommend for me? Any help would be appreciated.

Agree on processor upgrade suggestion but just wonder if it may be your gpu rather than your cpu thats causing your prob's.

If you upgraded to ,say , a 8800gt 512mb it would give you a big boost in performance and you could transfer it to next build.

Graphics is an option, but I'd say upgrading the CPU to a dual core would help massively in all areas of usage.

As suggested, I'd look for a 3800+ X2, one of the later (ie. newer) E6 revisions if you can. 2.6Ghz is pretty much guaranteed, some people have managed to get them to 2.8Ghz.

Running an overclocked opty with an overclocked 7950GT card and still stuggling to run COD4 at anything other than lowest settings possible at 1440x900 :(

CPU upgrade would def help you but a 8800 card would be a better idea....both would be even better :)

So would you all agree that an X2 3800 would be enough to improve my COD4 experience significantly until I build my new system?

Is that Opty water cooled? I dont push mine past 2500Mhz

If your going to get a x2 3800 you are going to have to overclock it to get most out of it.

Cannot tell from your postings if you do 'it' ?

Upgraded from a 3700+ to a 3800+ X2 and the difference is massive, and even more so when overclocked.

I have mine at 2500mhz which keeps it running nice and cool but still offers great performance. I've had it at 2750mhz but it got a bit hot, although it was still totally stable.

Considering you can get these for £30 i would go ahead and do so. Just make sure your BIOS revision supports X2 CPU's, otherwise you may have to flash it first.
